Latest Book: My Correspondence with Antonio Ribera
Released online July 2023. Thanks to Moisés Garrido and Claudia Moctezuma, who conducted an excellent scanning and editing job, as well as to writer Javier Sierra, who contributed invaluable archives, I have just compiled a 750-page PDF monograph titled Mi correspondencia con Antonio Ribera (My correspondence with Antonio Ribera). Ribera was a renowned ufologist of international prestige. I had an intense, albeit intermittent correspondence with him from 1966 until 2001, the year he passed away. Beyond our letters, we shared experiences and journeys. The monograph includes an introduction (pages 5 to 16), the original copies of our letters, related documents, and sheets containing photographs from our meetings and the congresses we shared (pages 17 to 711). It also contains one appendix with memorials written by Garrido and Sierra (pages 712 to 718), and another featuring all the personal dedications that Ribera inscribed in his books to me (pages 719 to 744). This work is a historical account of two seasoned Spanish figures involved in UFO investigation, published with the aim of preserving the local “UFO culture”. The Reliability of UFO Witness Testimony
In May 2023 the release was announced of The Reliability of UFO Witness Testimony, a large volume in size (21x29 cm, 711 pages) and content (57 chapters, 60 authors from 14 countries). Edited by V.J. Ballester-Olmos and Richard W. Heiden, it was published both in online format through Academia.edu and in print by UPIAR (Turin, Italy). The book is privileged with a foreword by Dr. Leonard S. Newman and contains praise blurbs by four distinguished academic authorities: Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, Dr. Steven Jay Lynn, Dr. Henry Otgaar, and Dr. Benjamin E. Zeller.
This book explores, investigates and debates about the validity of the human testimony when dealing with reports of unidentified flying objects (before called flying saucers, nowadays named UAPs), both in the theoretical and real-life perspectives. A truly academic endeavor that is certainly here to stay for a number of years as a scholarly piece of high-class information, research, knowledge and discussion on this important subject matter.

The utility of forensic psychology and forensic cognitive science should not be underestimated. The subject matter experts who contributed to the Ballester-Olmos & Heiden volume tend to concur … most of us go along rather strongly with the demonstrable fact that perception and interpretation of UAPs or UFOs is rooted in identifiable psychological processes, many of which have already been characterized to a significant degree. It is a tough read for one sitting and just skimming through the chapters gave my brain an overload … Each author gave their own views on the subject and each had a lot to say. This book is an important antidote to the UAP frenzy going on in the USA … Given that the reliability of UFO witnesses is mainly approached from a psychosocial perspective, ufologists might dismiss this volume as the ultimate in debunkery and scepticism. Yet, as Dr. Newman puts it in the Foreword: "Skeptics are knowledge-seekers. Despite the central importance of the human observer, witness reliability has too often remained a peripheral consideration. Not any longer. The Reliability of UFO Witness Testimony treats this very issue in over 700 pages, authored by dozens of international scholars with diverse approaches and areas of expertise, applied to particular cases and the general problem. Do all UFOs dissolve into mirages when examined closely enough? Not necessarily, but most do. For proponent and skeptic alike, this book provides an invaluable map through the labyrinth of human shortcomings as observers of UFOs, a necessary understanding of how the observer can go wrong whether the things observed are conventional or ultimately anomalous. The United States Congress's House Oversight Committee was established "to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of the federal government and all its agencies.”4 Within its structure is the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs.5 This subcommittee decided to convene a UFO hearing, suggesting that national security, public safety, and government transparency are at stake.
Rumors of pressure from Pentagon brass against the hearing, NASA officials pulling out, AARO rejecting participation, and potential witnesses not clearing their political backgrounds with the Committee's investigator's check, overshadowed the preliminary proceedings of the meeting.6
We don't know whether to label it as ridiculous or shameful. Under the guise of a bipartisan initiative, the real scenario is a group of mostly Republican politicians seemingly trying to undermine the Democrat administration, using the tenuous pretext of UFOs this time around.7 Whether they are naive, misinformed, driven by ideology, or simply gullible remains unclear.
Three individuals testified on July 26, 2023, before those United States Congress lawmakers.8,9 Two of them, D. Fravor and R. Graves, have extensively discussed their UFO experiences on TV shows and in interviews over the years. The third, D. Grusch, has recently risen to media prominence with a slew of sensational—and certainly fantastical—claims. So, the immediate and pressing question is: did they reveal anything new? The simple answer is no. Matter-of-factly, all that effort was pointless. To begin with, what was the intention of this hearing? First and foremost, it was an attempt to highlight alleged secrecy and lack of transparency by the U.S. Government on the UFO subject. Then, to excite the audience of the pro-UFO movement by affirming that UFOs (UAP as they are called today, after the terms flying saucer and UFO lost their novelty) persistently pose threats to US national security. The UFO narrative has been in the spotlight in the last few years in the United States, and the topic generates interest, with critiques of the Government’s cover-up being particularly palatable to the public.
The two-hour and 17-minute hearing can be summarized as follows:
(1) Retired US Navy Commander and longtime UFO enthusiast, David Fravor, once again detailed his first-hand, well-known UFO sighting on November 14, 2004, while dispatched from the USS Nimitz carrier, 110 miles off San Diego, California. He described a "tic-tac" shaped UFO that moved in a way that baffled aviators. Infrared airborne footage related to this event was released in 2017. The footage was initially claimed to demonstrate unusual flight characteristics, such as sharp acceleration. However, experts have since dismissed these claims and assessed the object in the video as likely being a conventional aircraft.10,11,12
(2) Former military pilot Ryan Graves was flying an F-18 near Jacksonville, Florida on January 21, 2015, operating from the USS Roosevelt carrier, when another of the three infamous “Navy UAP FLIR videos” was captured, colloquially referred to as “Gimbal.” The footage displays a peculiar rotation of the target that puzzled the pilots. However, experts have shown this rotation to be an artifact of the gimbal mechanism13 used for tracking the target, and they believe the footage merely depicts a conventional aircraft.14,15 Graves did not record this video, as he was in a different plane at the time, but he claims to have seen the “fleet of UFOs” when viewing recorded video on the radar screen, sometime after the incident. Furthermore, he has reported a few second-hand sightings of UFOs that resemble a black cube enclosed in a transparent sphere. During his testimony, which was replete with second-hand accounts, he shared that a colleague once nearly collided with a UFO.
Experience in factual UFO investigation has repeatedly shown the following sequence: a pilot reports encountering a UFO during flight. Many, wrongly assuming that pilots are exceptional observers, are left stunned. Indeed, when a pilot with countless hours in advanced fighter jets recounts an event of such scale and apparent drama, it resonates strongly, particularly to laypeople. But when the sighting undergoes thorough and impartial scrutiny, the object often gets identified as an airplane, balloon, drone, bird, or planet. The pilot or the equipment simply erred. It's undeniable that individuals from all walks of life—farmers, clergy, military personnel, and so on—observe objects or lights in the sky they cannot identify, usually due to their limited knowledge or other causes. Pilots are no exception; they can both mis-observe and misreport. Over 1,300 UFO sightings by pilots are recorded in the annals of ufology. However, dispassionate research proves that well-documented and properly briefed air encounters tend to lead to full rational explanations, or reasonably match naturally occurring phenomena or man-made objects. Those that remain debatable are likely due to a lack of comprehensive information. For example, the latest examination of the most comprehensive database of airborne UFO sightings, where 55 cases were meticulously reviewed, produced the following findings:16

The core of his declaration is the existence of a “multi decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse engineering program” in the United States, to which very conveniently he was denied access when requested it. He stated he had “personal knowledge” of people harmed or injured in efforts to cover up extraterrestrial technology, but when pressed for details by Anna P. Luna (R-FL), he simply talked about “concerns based on the interviews I conducted.” Grusch affirmed he personally “suffered retaliation” because of his decision to report to his superiors. When cross-examined, he described it as “brutal and very unfortunate.” He avoided elaborating so as not to compromise a whistleblower investigation against him that was underway. However, he noted the existence of an “active, planned reprisal activity against myself … from certain senior leadership at previous agencies I was associated with,” which he called “administrative terrorism.”20 He also shared the belief that people had been murdered by concealing alien secrets, and said: “I directed people with that knowledge to the appropriate authorities.” [Our emphasis] Additionally, he mentioned hostile activity caused by alien technology to humans. He reiterated his vague claim about the Government’s “multidecade campaign to disenfranchise public interest” in UFOs.
Grusch labeled his belief that the Government is in possession of UAPs as “absolute” (based on … “interviewing over 40 witnesses over four years.”) He applied the term “non-human” to alleged U.S. Government awareness of alien evidence occurring since the “1930s” (incidentally, this is something that scholarly ufologists had written off as a fake years ago.)21,22 Particularly, when Nancy Mace (R-SC) naively asked if we have the bodies of pilots of this craft, he affirmed that “biologics came with some of these recoveries. Yeah …Non-human, and that was the assessment of people …I talked to that are currently still on the program.” [Our emphasis]
Grusch also presented theoretical arguments to offset the awkward issue of saucer crashes, raised by Congressman Eric Burlison (R-MO) during an excellent interrogation: “multi dimensionality … the framework … called the Holographic Principle. It both derives itself from general relativity and quantum mechanics … you can be projected from higher dimensional space to lower dimensional.” Clearly, this individual is deeply immersed in the concepts found in hypothetically speculative papers produced by the AAWSAP.23 This person is materially living in Wonderland! Few specifics can be found in Grusch’s discourse, which conveniently shields him from direct rebuttal. However, he did mention something about saucer recoveries that can be ascertained or refutable: “the recoveries predate a lot of our advanced programs.”
From our perspective, the overarching tone of the majority of Republican comments was one of credulity, likely swayed by recent media narratives. For us, the standout portion of the hearing was when Mr. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) stepped in, bringing a higher level of rigor and skepticism to the proceedings. He presented pointed questions that could get Grusch into trouble if his replies were finally proved false. Grusch found a way out, though, by frequently claiming that the information in question was “confidential.” For instance:
Q: … have you met with people with direct knowledge … of non-human origin craft?
A: Yes, I personally interviewed those individuals. [Our emphasis]
Q: … have you met with people with direct knowledge … about advanced technologies that the US. Government has?
A: I was briefed to the preponderance of the Defense Department’s, both space and aerospace compartment of programs.
Q: Do you have knowledge that there are programs in the advanced tech space that are unsanctioned?
A: Yes, I do.
Q: …when you say that they’re above congressional oversight, what do you mean?
A: Complicated question … there’s some I would call it abuse here … congressional oversight of conventional special access programs. So I’ll use title 10 … However, the Gang of Eight is … supposed to be notified if a … unacknowledged SAP is created …
Q: I don’t want to cut you off, but how does a program like that get funded?
A: I will give you generalities. I can get very specific in a closed session. But misappropriation of funds, and,
Q: does that mean that there is money in the budget that is said to go to a program, but it doesn’t, and it goes to something else?
A: Yes, I have specific knowledge of that.
Q: Do you think US Corporations are overcharging for certain tech they’re selling to the US. Government and that additional money is going to programs?
A: Correct. Through something called IR&D. [Independent Research & Development]
Q: Let’s talk about satellite imagery … do you have direct knowledge … that there are satellite imagery of these events?
A: … I personally reviewed both [at NGIA] what we call overhead collection and from other strategic and tactical platforms that were I could not even explain prosaically...
Q: … Crash imagery?
A: I can’t discuss that in an open session.
Q: Do you have any information that the US government is involved in a disinformation campaign to deny the existence of certain UAPs?
A: I can’t go beyond what I’ve already stated publicly in my News Nation interview because it touches other sensitivities.
Grusch’s prepared statement raised several questions, but his responses were consistently evasive, often resorting to a go-to phrase: “I can’t discuss that publicly” (not to mention his pretentious style of replying to simple questions).24 His laconic responses often left an aura of mystery. Essentially, his main excuse for not divulging more information was that he could “go to jail for revealing classified information,” even though he had already discussed the matter in TV interviews.
Examination of his testimony under oath reveals that it is based on information given to him by third parties. When asked whether he saw the spacecraft and the bodies, his answer was either non-committal or negative. He did not share any piece of the “compelling evidence” he claims to have received, and he did not name any sources, timing, or locations, either. We are confident this gentleman trusts his sources. However, we question the legitimacy of their claims and seriously doubt that his bold statements hold any merit. Notably, the legend of UFO crashes and alien bodies in the custody of the United States has been a longstanding narrative in UFO literature, filled with countless uncorroborated and unverified tales.25
On the oft-discussed topic of stigma, the three "witnesses" were specifically asked if they faced any repercussions from their superiors after reporting their encounters with a UAP. Both pilots Fravor and Graves answered “No”. Star witness Grusch had to reply: “I’ve actually never seen anything personally.” A witness of what, then? Of hearsay and rumors, as will be proved when it is duly investigated.
Reflecting on this hearing, one might have anticipated a more skeptical stance from the Congress representatives. Ideally, lawmakers should uphold a degree of discernment and criticality. However, they appeared merely to seek validation of the assertions already made by their "witnesses", seldom challenging or interrogating their statements. Whenever Grusch was pressed for details, he demurred. No one censured him even when he made grave accusations about "harmful and aggressive activity" and “colleagues allegedly injured” by both the UAPs and the "Federal Government". How can elected officials remain so unperturbed when presented with such alarming claims?
These politicians must possess an extraordinary level of resilience to calmly endure Grusch's public derision. He basically said, "I can't give information in public.” Then why was he even summoned to testify? Grusch openly ridiculed the Congress members with palpable arrogance. He loves to show he is privy to unique information. The simple, straightforward question: do you believe our government has made contact with intelligent extraterrestrials? is answered as “Something I can’t discuss in public setting.” It's a classic case of casting aspersions and then evading responsibility.
The ill-designed hearing was clearly redundant and ineffective. This wasn't solely because the UFO stories shared by the three testifying witnesses were already public knowledge, but also because the stated goal—that the Government establishes a protocol for safely reporting UFO sightings—had previously been announced as the primary objectives of the DoD’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). Indeed, the Pentagon’s UFO department had designated this objective as the "authorized reporting mechanism and public guidance," originally scheduled for rollout in March 2023.26
But as a reader, you would rightly ask us: what's our assessment of these sworn statements? Regarding pilot-related UFO incidents, we've already established that after 76 continuous years of sightings—from land, air, and space—no presented case has proved to be irreconcilable with human-made flying vehicles. True evidence isn't mere chatter: it is tangible proof. And such irrefutable proof is noticeably absent. We understand the power of dreams. But certain dreams do not come true.
As for Grusch's grandiose declarations, they're questionable and problematic. They boil down to mere hearsay. He just relayed claims told to him by others. Nothing presented is verifiable, with no palpable or documented evidence. It’s clear that he had been fed false information that he has uncritically accepted. We perceive this as a monumental misstep by the U.S. Congress in their dealings with the UFO subject, UFO proponents, the UFO lobby in the American Congress, impressionable politicians, and a media frantically pursuing viewership. Yet a seemingly pyrrhic victory by Grusch and the UAP lobby, who've momentarily secured a potent platform for such baseless testimonies. But time puts everyone in their place.
What has this session truly accomplished? It has merely amplified a set of extravagantly dubious claims. Claims that AARO must now meticulously dissect and disprove. Could this be the reason behind the delay of their 2022 annual report, initially expected in July 2023? The Pentagon spokeswoman Sue Gough rapidly challenged Grusch’s allegations by specifically stating that the Pentagon does not have “any verifiable information to substantiate claims that any programs regarding the possession or reverse engineering of extraterrestrial materials have existed in the past or exist currently.”27 This aligns with the official statement from the Pentagon when these allegations first emerged in early June 2023.28 (See “Pentagon Response” caption below).
We wouldn't certainly want to be in Dr. Kirkpatrick's shoes, but an immediate response has been released that places AARO on a collision course with Grusch's unsubstantiated claims.29 Indeed, 24 hours later, AARO’s chief released a compelling letter defending his team’s transparency and setting the record straight. As couldn’t be otherwise, this was defined both by Dr. Kirkpatrick and by the Pentagon as “personal opinions” expressed in his capacity as a private citizen.30 (See “Hearings and Transparency” document).
The most remarkable words by Kirkpatrick are that the “central source … [certainly Grusch] has refused to speak with AARO” and that “the information reportedly provided to the Congress has not been provided to AARO”. Kirkpatrick is crystal clear saying that they have not yet found any evidence of secret programs or evidence about the recovered crafts and biological remains claimed during the hearings.
An accurate recap for the depositions of the three declarants appears in a chat between Mick West and Steven Greenstreet:31 David Fravor: he claimed to have had a 5-minute encounter with the “Tic Tac” UFO while flying off San Diego, but his wing pilot, Alex Anne Dietrich, twittered it was just an ”8-10 seconds visual.” Ryan Graves: he did not see a UFO himself. Updated radar systems implemented in their aircraft during 2014-2015 detected anomalies “every day” when in the W-72 military training area off the coast of Virginia. Sightings of a “cube inside a clear sphere” could be smaller Chinese spy balloons from nearby Cuba. David Grusch: “very disappointing … he did not say anything new.. A second-hand or n-hand testimony. As for most congresspeople: “they did not understand the situation.”

Dr. Kirkpatrick Talks Again
On July 21, 2003, ABC News Live Prime (15 million subscribers) devoted an 8.43 minute segment to an interview in the Pentagon to Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the U.S. Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in late July. They call it an exclusive interview, I call it a spoiled and wasted interview. It must be difficult to accomplish an interview with the “Pentagon’s top UFO investigator” and, I would add, top UAP figure in the world today. However, the conversation conducted by Devin Dwyer, unless it is an abridged format cut from some extended per-pay platform, was very simple. Checking the transcript (thanks to Chris Aubeck), out of 1382 words, hardly 421 were exactly questions and answers, the rest was just filler. This is the body of the interview, Dr. Kirkpatrick’s words in italics, followed by my remarks:
I'm a long-term intelligence officer, scientist and military officer.
Q: What keeps you up at night?
A: Technical surprise and that could be adversary technical surprise or extraterrestrial technical surprise
If the question is rhetorical, even sensationalist, the reply is naive. With just one year on the job, how does he dare to advance either of these two surprising, unexpected options as a solution for the UFO phenomenon? If it weren't dramatic, the situation would be laughable: the United States Government appoints a UFO investigator to figure out if the country is under surveillance by foreign powers! Russians and Chinese must be cackling. But make no mistake: I am fully convinced that AARO will perform a magnificent work in the analysis of military-sourced UFO reports (listen, it constitutes but a petty part of the whole phenomenon, and not a representative one!) But, at the same time, based on the phenomenology that has emerged since 1947, it is perfectly conceivable that there will be no technical surprise, that is, most examined cases will be “characterized” (their terminology), only a minor portion will be related to foreign intelligence activity, and no signs of any UAP/ET relationship will be found. I give AARO five years maximum to reach that position. But I can understand that Kirkpatrick also wishes to keep up the suspense (probably he does believe what he is saying, as well).
Q: It's a big job
A: Yes
The journalist now does not pose any query but raises an assertion that is naturally corroborated.
Q: What's the most common misconception people have of UAPs or of the work you're doing?
A: That they're all the same thing and they're all extraterrestrial and neither of those are true … we have to go through the rigor of taking each one matching it against our known objects and known catalogs and then reviewing that peer reviewing that making sure that everybody's in agreement.
That appears to be an abbreviated, cropped interview, pieces of missing talk must be in the middle. Anyway we could interpret that he is claiming that (1) there is no single common explanation for the UAP reports collected by AARO, and that (2) this is not extraterrestrial. I agree with both points. There are multiple origins and natures for UAP reports, and all of them are conventional, manmade or natural.
Q: What's your best guess of what happened there?
A: It's really hard to guess on this and I don't like to guess
This is about the “tic tac” airborne incident of November 14, 2004 which occurred some 110 NM SSW off San Diego, California. A probable aircraft combined with camera motion for some analysts. Good to see that Kirkpatrick is not willing to give the journalist the headline he is seeking.
Q: So have you hit a dead end with this one then?
A: The more things that I see that resemble a Tic Tac then I can get more and more information about what that is
Facing the reporter’s insistence, the only recourse is a general response to say that more identical events are needed to weigh its real strangeness.
Q. So that two to five percent which are anomalous incidents which you're still looking into, could potentially be extraterrestrial activity?
A: So we are going to follow our data and our investigations wherever it goes right so I have a full range of hypotheses
Q: So you can't rule it out
A: I can't rule it out but I don't have any evidence that says that yet (My emphasis).
Kirkpatrick is as restrained as possible, not to allow the journalist to round off his write-up. But he cannot state the ETH is out of order yet because he would be marked as skeptical and, therefore, lame for this job. I’d venture he is totally honest as far as his thoughts in his responsibilities at AARO.
Q: You can say categorically you've seen no convincing, confirmable evidence it's intact spacecraft kept by the US government
A: No, I have seen nothing that leads me to that conclusion
It is crystal clear. Do you hear Mr. Grusch?
Q: Is it possible there is some secret program that you're just not aware of?
A: I don't think so, I have access to anything and everything I need
I hope some lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives, polluted with UFO ideas, realize how high and clear is this statement from the one who has the need to know. It is the type of question that paranoid conspiracy theorists would ask. Kirkpatrick’s reaction is straightforward and needs no interpretation.
Q: Why do you think these whistleblowers are coming forward?
A: Well, one I think the recent law which extended whistleblower protections to them and named AARO as the authorized disclosure Authority, uh opens the door for them to come and tell us exactly what they think they saw or know about
Q: Do you believe them?
A: I believe that they believe what they're telling me, and my job is not to, it's not a question of belief, right, it's a question of what can I go research
Impeccable. Everybody is entitled to their beliefs but unless they do not show incontrovertible evidence to back up their claims, they remain mere worthless beliefs.
A: So a lot of these allegations crop up again and again over
That new sentence followed a commentator’s off voice on the recent legislation to force the U.S. Government to publicly release any UAP records created in the last 25 years. Kirkpatrick refers to the “Government Disclosure” myth that pops up every few years assuring that the United States President will go public confessing they have aliens in a Pentagon pantry.
Q: Do you think extraterrestrial life is out there?
A: I think it's statistically unrealistic to think it isn't. I mean given the vastness of the universe…
Of course, who says no to that one? But the matter of fact is that life in the universe has nothing to do at all with the UFO phenomenon.
Q: Are you going to find it on your watch?
A: Well, wouldn't that be fun and that would be probably the best outcome of this job
Another circus question. Every ufologist in their believer stance dreamed of proving the flying saucer-alien equation. Kirkpatrick still shows historical ignorance on the true UFO phenomenon (he is inundated by recent UAP reports from pilots and other technological platforms), otherwise he would not hazard to think that finding ET life signs in UAP reports is an option. Well, maybe it's better that way. He will receive less pressure from believers and will be able to work in peace. I perceive lots of pressure on Dr. Kirkpatrick’s work. The research of a collection of stories that formally started with the flying saucers of 1947, that were non-stop preceded by the 1946 ghost rockets, the 1942-1945 foo-fighters, the 1930s mystery airships, the 1908-1918 war scare ships, the 1899-1902 phantom balloon scare, the 1896-1897 phantom airships, the 1883 mystery visitors, or the 1789 France balloon fear (just to name “UFO” waves in the last 200 years) is a very complex investigation and it demands time, tranquility and peace of mind. I am afraid that AARO is not working under those parameters. Only one quick comment: the three “Navy videos” (Tic-Tac, Gimbal and Gofast) appear as examples of encounters with “unexplained anomalous phenomena (UAP),” unlike others are explicitly noticed as “the object remains unidentified” or “unknown object.” To anyone’s interpretation.
More UAP-Related Legal Changes Boosted by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI).
As timely and precisely reported by Douglas Dean Johnson last June, the Senate Intelligence bill was an early reaction to unconfirmed rumors about “non-earth origin or exotic UAP material" and gave holders six months to make it available to AARO. Selected quotes from Johnson’s extremely detailed and informative article follow:
“The new UAP provisions are part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Intelligence Authorization Act (IAA, S. 2103), which was approved unanimously by the Senate Intelligence committee in a closed-door session on June 14, 2023 … it was posted on the Internet early on June 24. The new UAP language (found in Section 1104 of the bill) would require any person currently or formerly under contract with the Federal Government that has in their possession material or information provided by or derived from the Federal Government relating to unidentified anomalous phenomena that formerly or currently is protected by any form of special access or restricted access to notify the director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) within 60 days of enactment, and to provide within six months a comprehensive list of all non-earth origin or exotic unidentified anomalous phenomena material possessed and to make it available to the AARO director for assessment, analysis, and inspection."
“The Intelligence committee legislation … [also provides] that if such a person complies with the notification and make-available deadlines, then no criminal or civil action may lie or be maintained in any Federal or State court against any person for receiving [UFO] material or information."
“The seven-page committee amendment that is now Section 1104 of the bill was sponsored by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). It was co-sponsored by Senators Michael Rounds (R-SD), John Cornyn (R-Tx.), and Marco Rubio (R-Fl).”
“Besides the … requirements for UAP-related information and hardware, S. 2103 contains a sweeping prohibition on any future direct or indirect funding for any special-access program (SAP) activity related to unidentified anomalous phenomena … unless the programs have been formally, officially, explicitly, and specifically described, explained, and justified to the appropriate committees of Congress, congressional leadership, and the Director [of AARO]."
“The UAP provision also contains a ‘Sense of Congress’ subsection, which asserts that due to the increasing potential for technology surprise from foreign adversaries and to ensure sufficient integration across the United States industrial base and avoid technology and security stovepipes...the Federal Government must expand awareness about any historical exotic technology antecedents previously provided by the Federal Government for research and development purposes. ‘Sense of Congress’ language provides justification for a substantive requirement, in this case it is “a compelling need for the U.S. Government to step up its efforts to reverse-engineer any exotic technology that is within its reach, and the lawmakers have concluded that this requires a relaxation of some of the extreme secrecy controls that purportedly surround study of exotic technology.”
If there existed an emoticon for expressing astonishment it should be inserted here. How near future history will appraise the above congresspeople’s mania—a true obsession—on the existence of non-human technology in the hands of the United States Government for years, “held outside of the standard mechanisms for democratic oversight”? I can imagine without a doubt it will not leave them in a good place.
“One open question is how the current leaders of the Intelligence and Armed Services committees in the House of Representatives will respond to the new Senate UAP proposals. Congressmen Michael Turner (R-Ohio) and Jim Himes (D-Ct.), who are respectively the chairman and ranking minority member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), made generalized dismissive comments about the possibility of the government possessing secret alien technology, in a brief joint interview with Fox News on June 6.”
“On February 16, a bipartisan group of 16 senators – including Gillibrand, SSCI ranking minority member Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fl.), and SSCI Chairman Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) -- sent a letter to the second-ranking officials at the Department of Defense and in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, urging support for more robust funding for AARO. … A summary of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) released by the Armed Services Committee on June 23 also mentioned that the bill "authorizes increased funding for...the activities of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO)."
All in all, a number of members of the U.S. Congress are vastly involved in demanding their Government not only to study UFOs but to turn upside down the Administration to look for any past or current hidden program dedicated to UFOs. Despite my certainty that none of this exists (that is, possession and handling of alien materials), it seems right to me that a response is required at the highest level, to settle this issue once and for all.
On September 5, Douglas D. Johnson released a supplementary article following this matter up: "UAP-related provisions currently under consideration in Congress.” It is finished with this clear sentence: It is likely that the negotiation process will play out over a time span of months. In each of the last four years, an NDAA was not enacted until late December. … Enactment of an NDAA is highly likely – it has happened for the last 62 years running. However, it is by no means certain that any or all of the UAP-related provisions discussed on this page will be part of the final legislation. Any of these provisions could be modified a little or a lot, or dropped entirely, during the House-Senate negotiations. It is also possible that essentially new provisions dealing with the same general subject matter could emerge during the House-Senate negotiations. The Farmington, MN Police Officers UFOs
Generally, it is a guarantee of truthfulness when a police agent reports a UFO sighting (of course, there are notable exceptions). If the observation is shared by several of them, and there exists evidence in the form of photographs, any doubt about the reality of the event is dissipated. For a researcher like me, that has reached the grade of skeptic by dint of investigating UFO cases, it immediately means that there must be an ordinary explanation for the phenomenon seen and snapped.
Recently, I was filing documents on a series of UFO observations around Farmington, Minnesota, for September 1975 when this situation occurred. The Farmington Tribune edition of September 18, 1975 carried an article by staff writer Phyllis Brosseth with this heading: “Seven Officers Watch Early Morning UFOs.” It described how Dakota County Police Officer Mark Tarmann observed a mysterious light at 4:05 a.m. on Friday September 12 that persisted about one and a half hours. That brisk morning, he was sitting in the squad car in the Pine Knoll entrance facing east going to return back into Farmington, when he observed “a bright star just above the tree line in the east.” It showed a blueish hue, and “it began to move from the horizon and move around in a circular motion, then up and down.” Then, Officer Tarmann observed another bright object to the north of the first one at a 45-degree angle. Cleverly, he continued to think they were possibly bright stars which stood out from the rest, in the night sky. At this point, he drove to County Road 31 and 9 where he met Officer Tom Ingram from Apple Valley. “They observed the objects which were stationary at this time.” Also, officers from Rosemount, Lakeville, Eagan, and two Minnesota State Troopers had heard the conversation on the radios—when the police dispatch notified the FAA center—began to drift to County Road 31 and 9. The seven law enforcement officers watched the two lights for about half an hour, and Officer Tarmann remained at the spot until 5:30 a.m.
In the Tribune of September 25, editor Eugene Clay wrote: “Last week, [the newspaper] asked for a chance to photograph anything considered to be an Unidentified Flying Object. We got the opportunity. At 4:30 a.m. Monday [September 22, 1975], Officer Dan Churchill of the Farmington Police Department called this writer and we viewed two UFOs from a spot along County 31.” At least two other witnesses were Officer Brent Moody on duty in Apple Valley and Deputy Sheriff Gary McCloud. Photographs were made with a camera on a tripod with a 300 mm telephoto lens, at a 15-second time exposure. “The odd shapes—the newspaper read—are the result of the ‘thing’ moving about.” The following three pictures (obviously enlarged and cropped) were printed in the paper and they were described as follows:
The top two pictures show a star-like object to the southeast over Farmington. It changed color, from blue, to orange, and to red. Most fascinating --and different from stars—was the fact it moved, swung back and forth, and up and down.
We have a long-duration observation of two star-like objects in the nocturnal sky. We know their positions in the space. They seem to move slightly over themselves. The object first photographed corresponds with the double star Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky (Canis Major constellation), with a brightness magnitude of -1,45, which was at that time at azimuth 130º (sharp southeast) and at an apparent altitude of 13º over the horizon. It was displaying its typical, changing multicolored flashes. Color changes and apparent motion by a static stellar body are due to the turbulence phenomenon of scintillation (twinkling), caused by the refraction of starlight as it travels through layers of air in the atmosphere. The light is therefore distorted and appears to move as well.

Concerning the second object, it was none other than the planet Venus (-4,74 magnitude), which was at 4:30 a.m. at one degree above the horizon line and to the east (80.5º azimuth). At the start of the sighting while photographing Sirius, Venus would not be visible due to obstacles on the horizon and when it made its initial appearance, it would attract the attention of the eyewitnesses.
I study photographic UFO incidents, so the event that preceded 10 days before is added here just as both a further example of potential mistakes with astronomical stimuli, and the fallibility of usually reliable police officers. I am afraid that in this case the information is rather confusing, and to make things even more complicated, the celestial sphere that night depicted a concentration of major sky luminaries in different positions and elevations, so lots of candidates to choose: amongst them, in the east we had a very bright Venus (-4,53), in the southeast there were Mars (-1,52) and Sirius (-1,45), and high in the south was the planet Jupiter (-2,83), all of them possible culprits for such an exciting night where the bad ones did not interrupt the police officers enjoying night lights.
The rule of thumb here is clear: nocturnal, long-lived sightings of star-like, slow-moving lights have probably an astronomical solution. If you find a match between the position of the UFOs and that of bright stars or planets, the initial “wow” can become “bingo”!
First Shot, First Saucer. Buffalo, NY, 1954
There are periods of intensive UFO reporting that, from a sociological point of view, are especially interesting. One is 1954, when a world-wide UFO wave transpired. Since the commencement of my research in this field, I have been particularly fond of this year’s phenomenology, so heavy in landings and occupants claims in France, for example. In terms of UFO photography, 1954 was also abundant. With the passing of time, a few new cases have been discovered (I have used this blog site to show them), and data for some others have been corrected. For instance, today’s blog edition carries an article by Luis R. González with the original information of a Spanish photograph of that year, just retrieved from press morgues now digitalized.
I had in FOTOCAT very slim details of a picture taken in Buffalo, New York, in June 1954. No image was known either. Fortunately, my superb collaborator from Mississippi Kay Coggin has just sent me the clipping published in the Buffalo Courier Express of June 23, 1954, a press column entitled “Season’s First ‘Saucer’ With Camera” that provides all the details and, moreover, a copy of the snapshot of a “streak” sighted over the town.
I looked around the car—Perel recalled to the city’s daily—for a likely shot and didn’t see anything. Then I spotted the church spire and swung on it with the camera. It was then I saw this bright streak shooting across the sky. He pointed the camera and popped a picture not knowing what it was. A saucer? Yes and no, he said. Perel went home and developed the print in a minute. He came to the Courier-Express, following a friend’s advice, and remarked: The ‘saucer’-like illusion appeared to be at an altitude of 10,000 feet and wasn’t traveling too fast in a westerly direction. Suddenly, it just faded away. Perel, “a student-licensed pilot, more than averagely acquainted with sky illusions from clouds and sunglare on them” said: I’ve never see anything like that before. He ruled clouds out of the picture because there was too much haze and no other clouds around the subject of the snapshot. The Weather Report did not report anything unusual in “yesterday’s sky-watching operations.” The forecaster said: “I dunno just what it would be.”

This was his quick observation: “If genuine, I suspect we are looking at a broken contrail. Once in a while, contrails look like dashed lines. “Rubber Duck” FLIR Footage
New UAP, infrared video taken from an airplane of the Department of Homeland Security, having departed from Tucson, Arizona on a border patrol mission at 09:00 hours on November 23, 2019, when at 31º 29’ N, 111º 27’ W, very close to the Mexican division line. The analysis by Mick West of the incomplete available data of a very compressed video, competently and reasonably concluded that the object was probably a drifting balloon, or possibly a drone. His work also questions the interpretation as an anomalous object made by Peter Reali, of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU), for whom the object is anomalous.

This article is co-signed by Ukrainian and Russian UFO researchers. That, today, is a first-class achievement by itself. The three authors have a large record in their countries preserving official UFO archives. The first author, Igor Kalytyuk (Ternopil, Ukraine,1987), who kindly submitted this manuscript, has a M.A. degree by the Institute of Water Management and Environmental Management at the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering (2010), and is a software engineer by the University of Banking (2012) and the European University (2013). THE PROJECTS «GLOBAL ARCHIVE» AND «HERITAGE» FOR THE SAVING OF UAP-ARCHIVES

Abstract: Preservation and heredity of knowledge transfer are the key to the stability of any area of research. In ufology, on one hand, a significant amount of material accumulates incessantly, on the other hand, there is a continuous loss of qualitative and quantitative components of materials. Numerous examples of valuable materials loss for various reasons show the importance and urgency of this issue. The article describes the essence of the problem of storing ufological archives in detail, as well as shows the way to solving it on a real example. It shows the connection between the Global Archive and Heritage projects, as well as the scheme of documentation circulation, developed by the SRCAA "Zond" through joint efforts. The main result of preservation and digitization of archival materials is to the convenience of further processing, and significant reduction in the risk of their loss. The article elaborately describes the stages of archival data processing, nuances of the software used for this purpose, and demonstrates examples of the effectiveness of the archival data use. In fact, Ukraine currently has the largest electronic archive of UFO and AAP registration and study materials in the world. The developed scheme of processing and systematization of documents has proved its effectiveness, and can be applied by any other organization or institution that collects materials or explores the unknown. Materials of the ufological subculture, and a set of scientific identifications of UFOs as well as the study of AAP, the search for extraterrestrial life have scientific, primarily historical, value.
Introduction. A researcher who decides to study UFOs is forced to rely mainly on own experience, spend time getting acquainted with the literature, which isn`t always available in free access, and search for historical materials on UFOs in own region or country, to compile catalogs or watch lists instead of adding individually investigated cases to a unified database, etc. A UFO researcher spends significant part of time and finances on what has already been done many times before.
The purpose and objectives of the research. In any science, the acquired knowledge is accumulated, systematized, and made available to the next generation. There is a unified system of classification, terminology, refereed journals with indexing of articles, reliable storage of the obtained material, and raising the rank of a scientist in proportion to his or her knowledge and achievements, etc. Ufology is only approaching these standards, and the number of scientific publications in this field is still relatively small. A low degree of formalization and standardization also leads to the fact that clear professional requirements and the requirements for the product of activity are not being put forward, therefore a pseudo-expert environment is formed which provides unorganized publications, low responsibility, and inconsistent terminology. The degree of use of strict scientific standards and ethical norms in research also needs to be improved.
Unlike research funded by either the state or private capital, ufology mainly requires other sources of funding. As a general matter, the study of UFOs is secondary and is performed during time free from the main work, which cannot but affect the quality and duration of the research. However, it is also difficult to capitalize on such research. The most honest way would be to create one’s own ufological organization with membership fees and a printed newsletter. However, acting to obtain and implement grants, publishing in indexed publications, etc., researchers are forced to engage in the popularization of research more than in the research itself, which is a general trend of modern globalized science. Other methods lead to the appearance of materials of low scientific level, or even falsified ones, which distorts the general scientific picture since the collected materials are considered mainly as a potential means of profit, but not as something that has scientific and applied value. In other cases, the capitalization leads to restrictions in dissemination of the knowledge acquired, or in attempts to hide it. Ultimately, this leads to loss of materials. This is how the priceless archives of Veynyk, the author of manuscripts on UFO movement systems, and Ryom Varlamov perished.
If a researcher dies without taking care of the fate of own archives, then one of the first to want to appropriate the accumulated materials will be those who see only a monetary component in them. In the absence of a testament, all materials will most likely disappear from view immediately and become inaccessible to serious researchers. This happens not only with lone ufologists, but also with large organizations. For example, APRO, founded in 1952 by Jim and Coral Lorenzen, used to be the third largest organization in the United States. It had more than 25 thousand members and representatives on all continents. An archive with a dossier of 15,000 UFO sightings and many other materials was kept by the founders of the organization. But in the late 1980s, Jim and Coral died. "Ufologists" Brian Myers and Tina Choate of Scottsdale, Arizona, persuaded Lara Lorenzo (the heir) to hand the APRO archive over. The documents were taken away in several trucks and, due to lack of space, were dumped in a damp garage. No one has seen them after.
But that's not the worst story. It happens at times that relatives throw all the papers of the deceased into trash, considering them unnecessary junk. In the scientific world, such a loss of knowledge in peacetime is impossible. We can also cite a well-known example, when the Moscow archive of the Commission on Anomalous Phenomena under the Academy of Sciences was initially stored in the basement because there was no space, and then the hot water pipe burst. So, everything turned into paper mush, which was raked out with shovels. Only what was left at home by Petukhov and Faminaska survived. And in the nearby suburbs of Moscow, Pushkin's active ufological group split in the 1990s. During the split, her archive was destroyed so that it would not reach the majority.
Another example is the loss of artifacts and documentation related to the Kropotkin incident on November 17, 1987, including the metal that caused the "breakdown" of the equipment for structural and elemental analysis of samples of the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. The wreckage of the aircraft, unknown to almost no one and handed over by Inna Kuznetsova to SRCAA "Zond," was temporarily stored at the institute. Contrary to assurances about the integrity of the archive, the members of the center learned the terrible news: "the documents were stored as waste paper." The disappearance of many materials, boxes of photographic films, etc. was noticed. It was during this period that the artifact was stolen from the archive.
Cases of theft of materials by television broadcasters can be called frequent. Thus, the examinations of a series of UFO photographs taken by Korchagin in St. Petersburg in the summer of 1992 disappeared. Representatives of the Ren-TV channel filmed the program at Michail Gershtein's home: "They took a photo of the folder with documents in good light, we will definitely return it they said, - and they returned it, but not all of them. We had to count all the pieces of paper one by one. I realized it too late." A similar example is the disappearance of materials related to the case of the nuclear bomber on May 16, 1970, when SRCAA "Zond" was forced to entrust the transportation of the archive from Kharkiv to Kyiv to the "Inter" TV channel.
The military and special services are usually suspected of excessive secrecy in relation to UFOs. But in the West, for some reasons, there are military documents about UFOs with minimal censorship, which is usually due to ethical considerations (names of witnesses and their addresses). The volume of documents opened by ufological organizations is by an order smaller. To change this situation, first it is necessary to change the attitude toward the available materials about UFOs and to do everything so that they do not disappear and are as accessible as possible to other researchers. The easiest way is digitization, which allows to quickly copy materials, transfer them to colleagues, or put them out in the Internet. In the latter case, some censorship is necessary, as many eyewitnesses do not want their name, surname, or address publicly available.
Digitized materials should be stored in at least two locations to avoid loss in case of a hard drive failure. The ideal option is to save a copy on an external drive in a separate location to avoid loss during a fire or other natural disasters. Digitization of non-unique materials such as newspaper clippings, books, or thematic magazines should be coordinated with colleagues to avoid duplication. Ideally, there should be a single server where one can find out if something is available digitally and where to find it. There are several examples of the loss of electronic data due to the lack of backup copies: for example, Mikhail Gershtein lost a 500 Gigabytes hard drive video recording over Barnaul on the night of December 31 to January 1, 2008; and Igor Kalytyuk dropped his hard drive at the end of 2013. This led to the temporary loss of almost all available archives, including materials that were in a single copy, to the self-removal from the post of the head of the EIBC Center, and to a delay in the release of the Jubilee Bulletin, which had to be re-done almost from scratch.

If the amount of materials is too large to digitize, one must take care of their fate in advance. It should be clearly stated who should inherit the archive and under what conditions. The best thing is to bequeath everything to an independent organization that can provide their high-quality storage and free access for interested ufologists. The largest organization of this kind can be called Archives for the Unexplained (AFU) in Sweden (see http://www.afu.info). Fully equipped AFU warehouses contain more than two kilometers of shelves. This organization has more than 20,000 books at its disposal, not to mention thematic magazines and other documents. Therefore, since the main product of ufology is the expansion of knowledge about the surrounding world to obtain the latest technologies and increase national security, it should be financed and supported by the state as the main interested entity. Here, informational support is the main one, since most studies require data from global monitoring systems that provide high-quality evidence, instrument one in particular, and are operated by state institutions, to assess the reliability of data.
Informational support also includes preservation and heritability of data transmission. Thus, the transfer of materials into electronic archives and their systematization is one of the urgent tasks in ufology.
Main part. The "Heritage" project was started at SRCAA (Ukrainian Research Center for the Study of Anomalies) in 2005 by the former secretary of the Commission for the Study of Anomalous Phenomena, and later - SRCAA participant, Inna Kuznetsova, after the transfer of the preserved materials of the archive of the commission to SRCAA "Zond." Simultaneously, Artem Bilyk created a system of marking and classifying documents, which is currently used in SRCAA "Zond" and which is constantly being improved. Catalog records were saved in Excel format.
The purpose of the "Heritage" project is to systematize and record archival paper materials on UFOs and anomalous phenomena. The expected result of the Project is to obtain a material and electronic archive of the SRCAA for cataloging, exchange of materials, and their protection from destruction by diversification of storage. The project is carried out under the supervision of Ph.D. Artem Bilyk, the main executors of the project are Igor Kalytyuk and Sergey Petrov.
The first electronic developments within the framework of the future "Global Archive" were carried out in 2011 within the framework of then existing International Scientific Research Center "EIBC," and on June 14, 2014 according to Resolution 2014-item 2 of the "EIBC" it was implemented by Igor Kalytyuk co-authored with Mikhail Gershtein in the form of version 2.0, although the Center itself was absorbed on July 12, 2014 by another rather powerful one - the SRCAA "Zond," which actually became a monopoly in Ukraine in 2015, and continues to be a monopoly to this day.
Independent work on the "Global Archive" was continued by the same authors as part of additions. The goal of the project is to preserve the history of subcultural environment within the framework of the following topics: ufology, UFO identification, exposure and skeptical materials, AAP research, "channeling," the search for extraterrestrial life, including everything related to SETI. This is a completely scientific project within the framework of the history of subcultures.
General statistics of the archive by country, data as of June 2023, colors correspond to the number of material units, gray indicates countries without information on UFO. The entire archive now occupies 496 gigabytes, that is 60,953 files of 2,342 organizations or publishing houses or structures. In total, 88 countries are represented in it (including those that no longer exist).

An example of the work of the project, described in the protocol of SRCAA "Zond" dated November 16, 2016: "Owing to the work carried out under the leadership of the employees of the system and analytical department Igor Kalytyuk (coordination) and Sergey Petrov (authorized executor), an agreement was reached on the transfer of Vladimir Rubtsov's archive by his wife. Responsible storage will be carried out by SRCAA "Zond" (Kyiv). Based on the results of the analysis a part of the English-language archive will be transferred to Sweden to the well-known AFU organization, and a corresponding guaranteed letter has been received about the readiness of storage.
In total, about a dozen operational actions of Sergey Petrov were carried out, for which we are hugely thankful to him. It should be noted that, unfortunately, on November 2, 2016, Nataliya Kamyantseva passed away to the best of both worlds, and further acts on moving the archive were carried out by Evgeniya Rubtsova who fulfilled her mother's will. Sergey Petrov also copied the electronic archive from Vladimir Rubtsov's personal computer. November 4-6, 2016 the head of SRCAA "Zond" Artem Bilyk and the employee of the Department Petrov moved the archive to Kyiv from Kharkiv.
IT WAS RESOLVED: to conduct an initial analysis of the materials and report at the next meeting. To remember Rubtsov as a dedicated researcher and expert in his field - a challenging field of studying the unknown, the person that can be a model of domestic anomalistics. His work will live on in our scientific research! To express gratitude to the employees of the system-analytical department, Kalytyuk and Petrov, with an entry in the biography and protocol. During the existence of the "EIBC" Center, within the framework of the cooperation agreement, scanning was carried out in accordance with clause 2.1 of the cooperation agreement, and all related issues were also covered along the way. After the acquisition of the "EIBC" Center by the SRCAA "Zond" Center, the state of affairs became much better and the scanning entered a "pendulum" mode: the scanned material is returned and the materials to be digitized are collected (Kalytyuk and Petrov). Then, after the digitization is completed at leisure, the performer meets the repository representative for a new batch of material. Part of the materials which the performers managed to get is transferred to the persons responsible for storage immediately after digitization, as it was done with the remains of Oleksander Biletskyi's archives, and therefore there is no delay in obtaining permission to publish the materials. The materials kept by Mikhail Gershtein are scanned by him personally. ScanKromsator (for converting and cropping) and RasterStitch (for gluing several pages into one) are used for the layout of scans, and all of this is saved as djvu and pdf format documents. Part of the scans are collected into a pdf document using PDF24 software (if the document contains no more than 100 pages) and Adobe Acrobat (if more than 100). Materials obtained from the Internet are prepared using Microsoft Paint and Notepad, and then saved in pdf format using MS Word. A significant part of the materials still must be processed manually, due to the peculiarities of submitting Internet content: copying paragraphs into Notepad and preparing the drawings in Paint, and then changing: font and its size, intervals, location on the page, presentable transfer to another page, sometimes even changing to A3 letter format.
Another thing is that the documents are ready already. Documents are systematized by countries, organizations, or ministries; at the beginning of a book, for example, the following is indicated: the author's last name, initials, followed by the title, the year of publication, and all of this is in English. For example, bulletins are named: at the beginning is the name of the bulletin, and then the number and year, respectively.

The described work is time-consuming, but at the final stage it will be implemented as another addition to the "Global Archive." Upon completion, the systematized materials are sent by Kalytyuk to the recipients in the form of an archive, as well as get uploaded to the online storage; copies of the materials are made to other media holders, and are recorded to Blu-ray disks, in 2 copies. One copy is given to the AFU (Sweden). In 2017, a batch of physical materials was also transferred to AFU.

Another effective result of the "Heritage" project is finding in the archive the newest materials for research that have not been processed before. The document processing and systematization scheme developed over the years has proven its effectiveness, and can be applied by other organizations, institutions that collect materials or research the unknown.
Conclusions. In its turn, SRCAA "Zond" invites researchers and organizations that have preserved electronic and non-electronic media of information that may be of scientific interest in the study of Anomalous Phenomena, AP in particular, to cooperate. After digitization, all those who provide materials receive an electronic version of them, and upon request, the original is returned. The time of hiding and sacralizing knowledge has passed forever. Ufologists who really want to solve the secrets of UFOs and open the way to the Universe for humankind, should already think about maximum openness, collaboration, and cooperation. Until it becomes too late.
As practice has shown, it is possible for a small group of people to translate large volumes of information into electronic form, the main thing is to have desire and necessary skills for that.

Balloons are certainly in vogue lately. Since the February 2023 Chinese balloon incident over the United States, and the further admission by the U.S. Department of Defense’s AARO that half of the identified UAP reports are balloons, they are in the mood.

Recently, one twitter popped up in the Cloud with a video showing an unidentified flying object captured from an airplane aboard which was the Colombian girl model Valentina Vélez Rueda.1 According to information provided by “The Hidden Underbelly” (an internet influencer),2 the footage was snapped on May 4, 2003 by Jorge A. Arteaga, the pilot of a Cessna private plane flying at 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) and some 135 knots (250 kilometers per hour) between Medellín and Santa Fe, in the Antioquía department of Colombia. As can be clearly seen in the images, a strange-shaped object crossed their way. For the pilot, it was not a balloon nor a drone.

For UAP analyst Mick West, the balloon option was the most obvious explanation. He rapidly reminded us that Medellin, Colombia is renowned for their big alien/UFO balloon releases, for example, this one3:
Analysis by “Metabunk” in the United States concluded it was just a stationary balloon, and that it was the plane what was moving instead.4 For another study, however, it was really an actual flying object, because the apparition of a black dot in the footage might indicate that the UAP changed direction radically and accelerated dramatically, a dual performance that a balloon cannot accomplish.5 For Mick West, nevertheless, “the little speck seen at the end seems more like something on the cockpit glass, combined with camera motion. Having looked at it a little more, that's exactly what it is. Dirt on the window. You can actually see other bits of dirt doing the same thing. You can also see the camera move significantly in the reflection, but image stabilization is holding the exterior image steady, creating the motion of the window dirt.”6

Surprisingly, though, Andrés Duarte, a Chilean professional chemist and a recognized image analyst7,8 also replied to our query for an expert opinion. He found several possible preliminary indications and a quantifiable inconsistency that could prove that the video is a montage (edited fake) but his analysis is not yet finished.9
By coincidence, another similar footage was aired lately in Hispanic America. It was disseminated by Mexican ufologist Ross Cantu.10 Was it an UAP? No. Just a balloon. See the thread hanging under the balloon in the first picture, before the plane flew over it.

You can be scared if your plane speeds past a colorful UAP, but you have to consider the wide range of balloons as large as ~100m2 in projected area, with spectacular shapes and colors that are launched in Latin America, as this example of the Cantoya (Michoacán, Mexico) balloons raised on local festivities.11

If you hesitate that simple aerostatic balloons can be share the airspace at such heights, this is an example: recently, a Volaris flight from Jalisco to Mexico, D.F. sighted in the distance a recreational balloon at the flight level of 34,600 feet (10,550 m). The balloon was carrying the Brazilian flag!

Another New 1954 Photo
As I indicated above, there are certain periods of the history of ufology that interest me especially. My coworker Kay Coggin, a permanent source of old time press pictures, has sent me the following item released by the Pacific Island Monthly (PIM), volume XXV, number 5, on December 1, 1954. First time I saw it. Under the heading “Flying Saucer over Aitutaki?”, a snapshot and its caption was published in the magazine, and I am reproducing it: The cheery optimist who sent this to PIM writes: “This is positively the first Flying Saucer to be spotted in the Island. This one was snapped as it sneaked over Aitutaki lagoon just after a TEAL [Tasman Empire Airways Limited] aircraft has taken off for Tahiti. Mr. C. Dixon, standing on the stern of the CAA launch in the foreground, appears quite unperturbed. TEAL launch in the distance.” Our friend assumes that even a pinhole camera cannot lie.
Frankly, this image looks like to me more a simple film developing flaw, and I feel the magazine editor suspected the same. But it is one more piece for our collection of the “stranger things” of the epoch. By the way, the Pacific Islands are a group of islands located in the South of the Pacific Ocean, composed of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. In particular, The Aitutaki lagoon (today a luxury private resort) is in the Cook Islands, an associated state of New Zealand.
Illobrand von Ludwiger Dead
I have just learned, thanks to Marcianitos Verdes, the web page of the Mexican researcher Luis Ruiz Nóguez, the death of the German ufologist Illobrand von Ludwiger (1937-2023).1 I have had irregular correspondence with him for many years. In 1995, he invited me to contribute a paper to a book under his editorship: “UFO-Phänomene in Spanien,UFOs-Zeichen und Zeugen, Edition q (Berlin), pp. 126-139.2 In November 2004, on the occasion of delivering a lecture to the November 6, 2004 MUFON-CES congress at Frankfurt, I organized a loose workshop with some UFO researchers in Germany, including Von Ludwiger.3,4

Von Ludwiger was a total leader, and a believer in the UFO-extraterrestrial connection, but he was also committed to the scientific method in approaching the subject of unidentified flying objects. I have always thought that one of the best contributions to European literature was the collection of published conference proceedings of MUFON-CES annual congresses.5 Requiescat in pace.

Dr. Loeb and 37 other signatures basically did “an overview of [his own baby] the Galileo Project's investigation of UAP.” He needed to show the strength of his international team. The bottom line is a belief that UAP represent anomalies (in fact the UFO literature quoted is a list of examples of bad science) and to prove that they want to create a network of detecting apparatus. My prediction: in the next 10 years they will have not recorded anything extraordinary, except ambiguous phenomena. If that would have been posed 50 years ago I would jump in excitement and congratulations. But all flying saucers that had to navigate over our skies have already done it that to the dissatisfaction of mystery hunters who have been unable to prove any sighting was a scientific anomaly.

Último libro: Mi correspondencia con Antonio Ribera
Publicado en julio de 2023. Gracias a la inestimable ayuda de Moisés Garrido y Claudia Moctezuma y a la generosa aportación de archivos de Javier Sierra, he publicado la monografía "Mi correspondencia con Antonio Ribera", donde he dado a conocer las cartas que Ribera y yo cruzamos durante su vida, además de otros documentos de cierto valor histórico. Todo ello va en línea con las importantes premisas de transparencia y de preservación de la "cultura ufológica" del país. Moisés y Claudia han hecho un trabajo de edición soberbio e impagable, que nunca terminaré de agradecer. Este PDF de cerca de 750 páginas comienza con un texto de introducción (páginas 5 a 16) que da paso a la documentación propiamente dicha (páginas 17 a 711) la cual, además de las cartas que cruzamos, incluye muchas hojas con fotografías de viajes y encuentros que tuve con Ribera entre 1966 y 2001, el año de su fallecimiento, así como otros documentos de interés. Hay dos apéndices: uno con los memoriales escritos en su día por Sierra y Garrido (páginas 712 a 718) y otro con las dedicatorias personales que Ribera tuvo la gentileza de firmarme en sus libros (páginas 719 a 744). Creo que este es un material de indudable interés para aficionados a la ufología e historiadores de esta temática. ¡Realmente hiciste un gran trabajo! Mi impresión es que se convertirá en un libro de referencia no solo en ufología. El enfoque positivo “escéptico” del libro merece elogios y representa la originalidad de esta publicación. Marcel Delaval. La mayor parte de la evidencia ovni son testimonios de testigos. La mayor parte, entonces, depende de las percepciones y concepciones, recuerdos y habilidades comunicativas de humanos falibles. A pesar de la importancia central del observador humano, la confiabilidad de los testigos con demasiada frecuencia ha seguido siendo una consideración secundaria. Ya no más. “The Reliability of UFO Witness Testimony” trata este mismo tema en más de 700 páginas, escritas por docenas de académicos internacionales con diversos enfoques y áreas de especialización, aplicados a casos particulares y al problema general. ¿Todos los ovnis se disuelven en espejismos cuando se los examina con suficiente atención? No necesariamente, pero la mayoría sí. La audiencia OVNI 2023 del Congreso de los EE.UU.

El Comité de Supervisión de la Cámara de Representantes del Congreso de Estados Unidos se creó "para garantizar la eficiencia, efectividad y responsabilidad del gobierno federal y todos sus organismos".4 Dentro de su estructura se encuentra el Subcomité de Seguridad Nacional, Fronteras y Asuntos Exteriores.5 Este subcomité decidió convocar una audiencia sobre ovnis, sugiriendo que la seguridad nacional, la seguridad pública y la transparencia gubernamental están en juego.
Los rumores de presiones de los altos mandos del Pentágono contra la celebración de la audiencia, la retirada de funcionarios de la NASA, el rechazo de la participación de la AARO y el hecho de que otros posibles testigos no aclararan sus antecedentes tras las comprobaciones del investigador del Comité, ensombrecieron los procedimientos preliminares de la reunión.6
No sabemos si calificarlo de ridículo o de vergonzoso. Bajo la apariencia de una iniciativa bipartidista, el escenario real es un grupo de políticos, en su mayoría republicanos, que intentan socavar la administración demócrata, utilizando esta vez el tenue pretexto de los ovnis.7 No está claro si son ingenuos, están mal informados, les mueve la ideología o simplemente son crédulos.
Tres personas testificaron el 26 de julio de 2023 ante esos legisladores del Congreso de los Estados Unidos.8,9 Dos de ellos, D. Fravor y R. Graves, han hablado ampliamente de sus experiencias con ovnis en programas de televisión y entrevistas a lo largo de los años. El tercero, D. Grusch, ha saltado recientemente a los medios de comunicación con una serie de afirmaciones sensacionales y ciertamente fantásticas. Así pues, la pregunta inmediata y apremiante es: ¿han revelado algo nuevo? La respuesta es no. De hecho, todo ese esfuerzo ha resultado inútil. Para empezar, ¿cuál era la intención de esta audiencia? Ante todo, era un intento de poner de relieve el supuesto secretismo y la falta de transparencia del Gobierno de Estados Unidos en el tema de los ovnis.
A continuación, entusiasmar al público del movimiento pro-ovni afirmando que los ovnis (FANI como se les llama hoy en día, después de que los términos platillo volante y ovni perdieran su novedad) plantean persistentes amenazas a la seguridad nacional estadounidense. El relato ovni ha estado en el candelero en los últimos años en Estados Unidos y el tema genera interés, siendo las críticas al encubrimiento del Gobierno especialmente atrayentes para el público.
La audiencia, de dos horas y 17 minutos de duración, puede resumirse del siguiente modo: (1) David Fravor, comandante retirado de la Marina estadounidense y entusiasta de los ovnis desde hace mucho tiempo, detalló una vez más su conocido avistamiento ovni de primera mano del 14 de noviembre de 2004, tras despegar del portaaviones USS Nimitz, a 110 millas de San Diego, California. Describió un ovni con forma de "tic-tac" (un caramelo americano) que se movía de un modo que desconcertó a los aviadores. En 2017 se publicaron imágenes aéreas infrarrojas relacionadas con este suceso. En un principio se afirmó que las imágenes mostraban características de vuelo inusuales, como una aceleración brusca. Sin embargo, desde entonces los expertos han descartado estas afirmaciones y han considerado que el objeto del vídeo era probablemente una aeronave convencional.10,11,12
(2) El ex expiloto militar Ryan Graves estaba volando un F-18 cerca de Jacksonville, Florida, el 21 de enero de 2015, operando desde el portaaviones USS Roosevelt, cuando se capturó otro de los tres famosillos vídeos ovni FLIR de la Marina, coloquialmente conocido como "Gimbal." La filmación muestra la peculiar rotación de un objeto que desconcertó a los pilotos. Sin embargo, los expertos han demostrado que esta rotación es un error del propio mecanismo de navegación (gimbal)13 que utilizaba para rastrear el objeto, y creen que la grabación muestra simplemente un avión convencional.14,15 Graves no grabó este vídeo, ya que se encontraba en otro avión en ese momento, pero afirma haber visto la "flotilla de ovnis" al ver el vídeo grabado en la pantalla del radar, algún tiempo después del incidente. Además, ha informado de algunos avistamientos de segunda mano de ovnis parecidos a un cubo negro encerrado en una esfera transparente. Durante su testimonio, repleto de relatos de segunda mano, contó que una vez un colega estuvo a punto de chocar con un ovni.
La experiencia en la investigación de casos ovni ha mostrado repetidamente la siguiente secuencia: un piloto informa haber encontrado un ovni durante el vuelo. Muchos, suponiendo erróneamente que los pilotos son observadores excepcionales, se quedan atónitos. En efecto, cuando un piloto con innumerables horas de vuelo en aviones de combate avanzados relata un suceso de tal magnitud y aparente dramatismo, éste resuena con fuerza, sobre todo para los profanos. Pero cuando el avistamiento se somete a un escrutinio exhaustivo e imparcial, el objeto suele identificarse como un avión, un globo, un dron, un pájaro o un astro. El piloto o el equipo simplemente se equivocaron. Es innegable que personas de toda condición -agricultores, clérigos, militares, etc.- observan objetos o luces en el cielo que no pueden identificar, normalmente debido a sus limitados conocimientos o a otras causas. Los pilotos no son una excepción, ya que pueden observar e informar erróneamente. En los anales de la ufología constan más de 1.300 avistamientos de ovnis por parte de pilotos. Sin embargo, la investigación independiente demuestra que los encuentros aéreos bien documentados y debidamente informados tienden a dar lugar a explicaciones racionales, o a coincidir razonablemente con fenómenos naturales u objetos fabricados por el hombre. Los que siguen siendo discutibles se deben probablemente a la falta de una información exhaustiva. Por ejemplo, el último examen de la base de datos más completa de avistamientos aéreos de ovnis, en la que se revisaron meticulosamente 55 casos, arrojó los siguientes resultados:16
(3) David Grusch, antiguo oficial de inteligencia, "miembro de la UAP Task Force de 2019 a 202117 y ... de 2021 a abril de 2023 en la National Geospatial Intelligence Agency", supuestamente reportando a la UAPTF y a la AARO.18 Recientemente, Grusch ha saltado a la fama mediática por afirmaciones sorprendentes, como que Estados Unidos posee varias naves extraterrestres resultantes de accidentes y que lleva años realizando ingeniería inversa encubierta de su tecnología. Se esperaba con impaciencia la audiencia en curso, ya que muchos se preguntaban qué nuevos detalles podría revelar a los congresistas, ansiosamente reunidos para este testimonio, en compañía de dos teloneros. Como nota al margen, Grusch estuvo respaldado por dos guardianes de la fe de los platillos volantes: George T. Knapp, un periodista de televisión estadounidense, teórico de la conspiración y creyente en lo paranormal, y Jeremy Corbell, un documentalista que accedió a imágenes de ovnis filtradas por la UAPTF, rápidamente difundidas como prueba de la presencia extraterrestre, sólo para ser posteriormente desmentidas por analistas con los pies en la tierra.19
El núcleo de su declaración es la existencia de un "programa de ingeniería inversa y recuperación de accidentes ovni de varias décadas de duración" en Estados Unidos, al que muy convenientemente se le negó el acceso cuando lo solicitó. Afirmó que tenía "conocimiento personal" de personas perjudicadas o heridas en los esfuerzos por encubrir la tecnología extraterrestre, pero cuando Anna P. Luna (Rep.-FL) le presionó por detalles, él se limitó a hablar de "preocupaciones basadas en las entrevistas que realicé". Grusch afirmó que personalmente "sufrió represalias" por su decisión de informar a sus superiores. Al ser repreguntado, las describió como "brutales y muy desafortunadas". Evitó dar más detalles para no comprometer una investigación en curso contra él por sus denuncias. Sin embargo, señaló la existencia de una "actividad de represalia activa y planificada contra mí mismo... por parte de ciertos altos cargos de agencias anteriores con las que estuve asociado", que calificó de "terrorismo administrativo".20 También compartió la creencia de que se había asesinado a personas por ocultar secretos alienígenas, y dijo: "Dirigí a las personas con ese conocimiento a las autoridades apropiadas". [énfasis nuestro] Además, mencionó la actividad hostil de la tecnología alienígena hacia los humanos. Reiteró su vaga afirmación sobre la "campaña de varias décadas del Gobierno para reducir el interés del público" por los ovnis.
Grusch calificó de "absoluta" su creencia de que el Gobierno está en posesión de ovnis (basada en... "entrevistar a más de 40 testigos a lo largo de cuatro años"). Aplicó el término "no humano" al supuesto conocimiento por parte del Gobierno de EE.UU. de evidencia alienígena desde los "años 30" (por cierto, esto es algo que algunos eruditos ufólogos habían dado por falso hace años).21,22 En particular, cuando Nancy Mace (Rep.-SC) preguntó ingenuamente si tenemos los cuerpos de los pilotos de estas naves, Grusch afirmó que "restos biológicos llegaron con algunas de estas recuperaciones. Sí... no humanos, esa fue la valoración de las personas... con las que hablé y que actualmente siguen en el programa". [énfasis nuestro]
Grusch también presentó argumentos teóricos para contrarrestar la aberrante cuestión de los accidentes de platillos, planteada por el congresista Eric Burlison (Rep.-MO) durante un excelente interrogatorio: "la multidimensionalidad ... el marco ... llamado Principio Holográfico. Se deriva tanto de la relatividad general como de la mecánica cuántica ... se puede proyectar desde un espacio de dimensión superior a otro de dimensión inferior". Claramente, este individuo está profundamente inmerso en los conceptos que se encuentran en los documentos hipotéticamente especulativos elaborados por la AAWSAP.23 Esta persona vive materialmente en el País de las Maravillas. En el discurso de Grusch se pueden encontrar pocos datos concretos, lo que le protege convenientemente de una refutación directa. Sin embargo, sí mencionó algo sobre las recuperaciones de platillos que se puede comprobar o refutar: "las recuperaciones son anteriores a muchos de nuestros programas avanzados".
Desde nuestro punto de vista, el tono general de la mayoría de los comentarios republicanos fue de credulidad, probablemente influido por las recientes noticias de los medios de comunicación. Para nosotros, la parte más destacada de la audiencia fue cuando intervino el Sr. Jared Moskowitz (Dem.-FL), aportando un mayor nivel de rigor y escepticismo al procedimiento. Presentó preguntas punzantes que podrían meter a Grusch en problemas si finalmente se demostraba que sus respuestas eran falsas. Grusch encontró una salida, sin embargo, alegando con frecuencia que la información en cuestión era "confidencial". Por ejemplo:
P: ... ¿se ha reunido con personas con conocimiento directo ... de naves de origen no humano?
R: Sí, entrevisté personalmente a esas personas. [énfasis nuestro]
P: ... ¿se ha reunido con personas con conocimiento directo ... sobre tecnologías avanzadas que posee el Gobierno estadounidense?
R: Me informaron de la preponderancia de los programas del Departamento de Defensa, tanto espaciales como aeroespaciales.
P: ¿Tiene conocimiento de que existan programas en el ámbito de la tecnología avanzada que no estén sancionados?
R: Sí.
P: ...cuando dice que están por encima de la supervisión del Congreso, ¿a qué se refiere?
R: Pregunta complicada... aquí hay algo que yo llamaría abuso... supervisión por parte del Congreso de los programas convencionales de acceso especial. Así que voy a utilizar el título 10 ... Sin embargo, la Banda de los Ocho se ... supone que debe ser notificado si un ... SAP no reconocido se crea ...
P: No quiero interrumpirle, pero ¿cómo se financia un programa así?
R: Le daré generalidades. Puedo ser muy específico en una sesión a puerta cerrada. Por ejemplo, malversación de fondos, y…
P: ¿Significa eso que hay dinero en el presupuesto que se dice que va a un programa, pero no es así, y va a otra cosa?
R: Sí, tengo conocimiento específico de ello.
P: ¿Cree que hay empresas estadounidenses cobrando de más por ciertas tecnologías que venden al Gobierno de EE.UU. y que el dinero adicional se destina a programas?
R: Correcto. A través de algo llamado IR&D. [Investigación y desarrollo independiente]
P: Hablemos de las imágenes por satélite... ¿Tiene usted conocimiento directo... de que existan imágenes por satélite de estos sucesos?
R: ... Personalmente revisé tanto [en el NGIA] lo que llamamos recogida de plataformas estratégicas y tácticas que ni siquiera podría explicar prosaicamente...
P: ... ¿Imágenes de estrellamientos?
R: No puedo hablar de eso en una sesión pública.
P: ¿Dispone de información que indique que el gobierno estadounidense está implicado en una campaña de desinformación para negar la existencia de determinados ovnis?
R: No puedo ir más allá de lo que ya declaré públicamente en mi entrevista con NewsNation porque toca otras sensibilidades.
La declaración leída por Grusch suscitó varias preguntas, pero sus respuestas fueron sistemáticamente evasivas, recurriendo a menudo a una frase recurrente: "No puedo hablar de eso públicamente" (por no hablar de su estilo pretencioso al responder a preguntas sencillas).24 Sus lacónicas respuestas dejaban a menudo un halo de misterio. Básicamente, su principal excusa para no divulgar más información era que podía "ir a la cárcel por revelar información clasificada", aunque ya había hablado del asunto en entrevistas televisivas.
El examen de su testimonio bajo juramento revela que se basa en información recibida de terceras personas. Cuando se le pregunta si vio la nave espacial y los cuerpos, su respuesta es negativa o no se compromete. No compartió ninguna de las "pruebas convincentes" que afirma haber recibido, y tampoco nombró ninguna fuente, fecha o lugar. Estamos seguros de que este caballero confía en sus fuentes. Sin embargo, cuestionamos la legitimidad de sus afirmaciones y dudamos seriamente de que sus atrevidas declaraciones tengan algún mérito. Cabe destacar que la leyenda de los accidentes de ovnis y de cadáveres de extraterrestres bajo custodia de los Estados Unidos ha sido una narrativa que viene de lejos en la literatura ovni, llena de innumerables relatos no corroborados ni verificados.25
En cuanto al tema tan debatido del estigma, se preguntó específicamente a los tres "testigos" si se habían enfrentado a alguna repercusión por parte de sus superiores tras informar de sus encuentros con un ovni. Tanto Fravor como Graves respondieron que no. El testigo estrella Grusch tuvo que responder: "En realidad nunca he visto nada personalmente". ¿Un testigo de qué, entonces? De habladurías y rumores, como se demostrará cuando se investiguen debidamente.
Reflexionando sobre esta audiencia, uno podría haber esperado una postura más escéptica por parte de los representantes del Congreso. Lo ideal sería que los legisladores mantuvieran cierto grado de discernimiento y sentido crítico. Sin embargo, parecieron limitarse a buscar la validación de las afirmaciones ya hechas por sus "testigos", rara vez cuestionando sus declaraciones. Siempre que se le pedían detalles, Grusch se mostraba reticente. Nadie le censuró ni siquiera cuando hizo graves acusaciones sobre "actividad dañina y agresiva" y "colegas supuestamente heridos" tanto por los ovnis como por el "Gobierno Federal". ¿Cómo es posible que los cargos electos permanezcan tan imperturbables ante afirmaciones tan alarmantes?
Estos políticos deben poseer un extraordinario nivel de resiliencia para soportar con calma el escarnio público de Grusch. Básicamente dijo: "No puedo dar información en público". Entonces, ¿por qué se le citó a declarar? Grusch ridiculizó abiertamente a los congresistas con una arrogancia palpable. Le encanta demostrar que dispone de información privilegiada. A la simple y directa pregunta: ¿cree usted que nuestro gobierno ha establecido contacto con extraterrestres inteligentes?, responde: "Es algo que no puedo discutir en público". Es un caso clásico de tirar la piedra y esconder la mano.
La audiencia, mal diseñada, fue claramente redundante e ineficaz. Esto no se debió únicamente a que las historias de ovnis compartidas por los tres testigos que testificaron ya eran de dominio público, sino también a que el objetivo declarado -que el Gobierno establezca un protocolo para informar con seguridad de los avistamientos de ovnis- habían sido anunciados previamente como los principales objetivos de la “Oficina de resolución de anomalías en todos los dominios” (AARO, por sus siglas en inglés) del Departamento de Defensa. De hecho, esa oficina ovni del Pentágono había designado este objetivo como el "mecanismo autorizado de notificación y orientación pública", cuya puesta en marcha estaba prevista inicialmente para marzo de 2023.26
Pero como lector, usted nos preguntaría con razón: ¿cuál es nuestra valoración de estas declaraciones juradas? En cuanto a los incidentes ovni relacionados con pilotos, ya hemos establecido que tras 76 años ininterrumpidos de avistamientos -desde tierra, aire y espacio- ningún caso presentado ha demostrado ser irreconciliable con vehículos voladores de fabricación humana. La verdadera evidencia no es mera cháchara: es prueba tangible. Y esas pruebas irrefutables brillan por su ausencia. Comprendemos el poder de los sueños. Pero algunos sueños no se hacen realidad.
En cuanto a las grandiosas declaraciones de Grusch, son cuestionables y problemáticas. Se reducen a meras habladurías. Se limitó a transmitir afirmaciones que le habían contado otros. Nada de lo presentado es verificable, sin pruebas palpables ni documentadas. Está claro que le han dado información falsa que ha aceptado acríticamente. Consideramos que se trata de un paso en falso monumental por parte del Congreso de Estados Unidos en su relación con el tema ovni, los defensores de los ovnis, el lobby ovni en el Congreso estadounidense, políticos impresionables y unos medios de comunicación que persiguen frenéticamente tener audiencia. Una aparente victoria pírrica de Grusch y del lobby ovni político, que se han asegurado momentáneamente una potente plataforma para tales testimonios infundados. Pero el tiempo pone a cada uno en su sitio.
¿Qué ha conseguido realmente esta sesión? Simplemente ha sido altavoz de una serie de afirmaciones extravagantes y dudosas. Afirmaciones que la AARO debe ahora diseccionar meticulosamente y desmentir. ¿Podría ser esta la razón del retraso de su informe anual de 2022, inicialmente previsto para julio de 2023? La portavoz del Pentágono, Sue Gough, rebatió rápidamente las alegaciones de Grusch afirmando específicamente que el Pentágono no dispone de "ninguna información verificable que corrobore las afirmaciones de que hayan existido en el pasado o existan en la actualidad programas relacionados con la posesión o la ingeniería inversa de materiales extraterrestres."27 Esto coincide con la declaración oficial del Pentágono cuando estas alegaciones surgieron por primera vez a principios de junio de 2023.28 (Véase el documento "Respuesta del Pentágono" más abajo).
Ciertamente, no nos gustaría estar en la posición del Dr. Kirkpatrick, pero se ha hecho pública una respuesta inmediata que sitúa a la AARO en rumbo de colisión con las afirmaciones infundadas de Grusch.29 En efecto, 24 horas después, el jefe de la AARO publicó una contundente carta defendiendo la transparencia de su equipo y dejando las cosas claras. Como no podía ser de otra manera, tanto el Dr. Kirkpatrick como el Pentágono las definieron como "opiniones personales" expresadas en su calidad de ciudadano privado.30 (Véase el documento "Audiencias y transparencia").
Las palabras más notables de Kirkpatrick son que la "fuente central ... [ciertamente Grusch] se ha negado a hablar con la AARO" y que "la información que supuestamente se ha facilitado al Congreso no se ha proporcionado a la AARO". Kirkpatrick es meridianamente claro al decir que todavía no han encontrado ninguna prueba de programas secretos ni pruebas sobre las naves recuperadas y los restos biológicos reivindicados durante la audiencia del Congreso.
Por último, un preciso resumen de las declaraciones de los tres testigos lo hemos encontrado en un chat entre Mick West y Steven Greenstreet:31 David Fravor: afirmó haber tenido un encuentro de 5 minutos con el OVNI "Tic Tac" mientras volaba cerca de San Diego, pero su piloto de ala, Alex Anne Dietrich, dijo en Twitter que solo fue una "visualización de 8-10 segundos". Ryan Graves: él no vio ningún ovni personalmente. Los sistemas de radar actualizados implementados en sus aviones durante 2014-2015 detectaron anomalías "todos los días" cuando se encontraban en la zona de entrenamiento militar W-72 frente a la costa de Virginia. Los avistamientos de un "cubo dentro de una esfera transparente" podrían ser globos espía chinos más pequeños procedentes de la cercana Cuba. David Grusch: "muy decepcionante ... no dijo nada nuevo ... Un testimonio de segunda mano o más. En cuanto a la mayoría de los congresistas: "no entendieron la situación".

Los ovnis de los oficiales de policía de Farmington, Minnesota
Generalmente, es una garantía de veracidad cuando un agente de policía informa haber tenido un avistamiento ovni (hay notables excepciones, naturalmente). Si la observación es compartida por varios de ellos, y además existen pruebas en forma de fotografías, se disipa cualquier duda sobre la realidad del hecho. Para un investigador como yo, que ha alcanzado el grado de escéptico a fuerza precisamente de estudiar casos de ovnis, significa inmediatamente que debe haber una explicación regular para el fenómeno visto y fotografiado.
Hace poco estaba archivando documentos sobre una serie de observaciones de ovnis en Farmington, Minnesota, en septiembre de 1975, cuando concurrió esta última situación. La edición del Farmington Tribune del 18 de septiembre de 1975 publicó un artículo de la redactora Phyllis Brosseth con este título: "Siete oficiales de policía observan ovnis de madrugada”. Allí describió cómo el oficial de policía del condado de Dakota, Mark Tarmann, observó una luz misteriosa a las 04:05 horas del viernes 12 de septiembre, que persistió durante aproximadamente una hora y media. En una mañana clara y fresca, Tarmann estaba sentado en su coche patrulla en la entrada de Pine Knoll mirando hacia oriente, antes de regresar a Farmington, cuando observó "una estrella brillante justo sobre la línea de árboles, en el este". La luz mostraba un tono azulado y "comenzó a moverse desde el horizonte en un movimiento circular, luego hacia arriba y hacia abajo". Más tarde, el oficial Tarmann observó otro objeto brillante al norte del primero en un ángulo de 45 grados. Correctamente, siguió pensando que posiblemente eran estrellas brillantes que sobresalían del resto, en el cielo nocturno. En ese momento, condujo hasta la carretera del condado 31 y 9, en donde se le unió el oficial Tom Ingram, de Apple Valley. “Observaron los dos objetos, que estaban estacionarios en ese momento”. Además, los oficiales de Rosemount, Lakeville y Eagan, así como dos policías estatales de Minnesota, que habían escuchado la conversación de radio cuando el despacho de la policía informó al centro de la aviación federal, comenzaron a dirigirse a la misma carretera. Los siete agentes de la ley observaron las dos luces durante aproximadamente media hora, y el oficial Tarmann permaneció en el lugar hasta las 05:30 horas.
En el Tribune del 25 de septiembre, su editor Eugene Clay escribió: “La semana pasada, [el periódico] pidió una oportunidad para fotografiar cualquier cosa que se considere un Objeto Volante No Identificado. Tuvimos la oportunidad. A las 04:30 horas del lunes [22 de septiembre de 1975], el oficial Dan Churchill del Departamento de Policía de Farmington llamó a este escritor y vimos dos ovnis desde un lugar a lo largo de la carretera 31”. Al menos otros dos testigos fueron el oficial Brent Moody de servicio en Apple Valley y el alguacil adjunto Gary McCloud. Se realizaron fotografías con una cámara sobre trípode con un teleobjetivo de 300 mm, que se hicieron con un tiempo de exposición de 15 segundos. "Las formas extrañas -decía el periódico- son el resultado del movimiento de la 'cosa'". Las siguientes tres imágenes (obviamente ampliadas y recortadas) se imprimieron en el periódico, donde se describieron de la siguiente manera:
Las dos imágenes superiores muestran un objeto con forma de estrella al sureste sobre Farmington. Cambió de color, de azul, a naranja y a rojo. Lo más fascinante, y diferente de las estrellas, fue el hecho de que se movía, oscilaba hacia adelante y hacia atrás, hacia arriba y hacia abajo.

Nos encontramos con una observación de larga duración de dos objetos similares a estrellas en el cielo nocturno. Conocemos sus posiciones en el espacio. Parecen moverse ligeramente sobre sí mismos. El objeto fotografiado en primer lugar se corresponde con la estrella doble Sirio, la estrella más brillante del cielo nocturno (constelación Canis Major), con una magnitud de brillo de -1,45, que se encontraba en ese momento en un acimut de 130º (casi exactamente el sureste) y a una altitud aparente de 13º sobre el horizonte. Mostraba sus típicos y cambiantes destellos multicolores. Los cambios de color y el movimiento aparente de un cuerpo estelar estático se deben al fenómeno del centelleo, una turbulencia causada por la refracción de la luz de las estrellas a medida que viaja a través de las capas de aire en la atmósfera. Por lo tanto, la luz se distorsiona y la fuente parece moverse también.

En cuanto al segundo objeto, se trata nada menos que del brillante planeta Venus (magnitud -4,74), que se encontraba a las 4:30 horas apenas a un grado por encima de la línea del horizonte y en dirección este (80,5º de acimut). Al inicio del avistamiento, mientras se fotografiaba a Sirio, Venus no sería visible debido a obstáculos en el horizonte y, cuando hiciera su aparición inicial, llamaría la atención de los testigos presenciales.
Yo estudio incidentes ovni con fotografías, por lo que el suceso que le precedió diez días antes se incluye aquí como un ejemplo más de posibles errores con estímulos astronómicos y de la ausencia de infalibilidad de testigos (policías) generalmente confiables. Me temo que en ese caso la información es bastante confusa y, para complicar aún más las cosas, la esfera celeste de esa noche presentaba una concentración de las principales luminarias del cielo en diferentes posiciones y elevaciones, por lo que había muchos candidatos para elegir: entre otras, al este teníamos a un brillante Venus (-4,53), en el sureste estaban Marte (-1,52) y Sirio (-1,45), y alto en el sur se hallaba el planeta Júpiter (-2,83), todos ellos posibles culpables de una noche tan emocionante, en la que los malos no interrumpieron a los policías que disfrutaban de las luces nocturnas.
La regla general aquí es clara: los avistamientos nocturnos y de larga duración de luces semejantes a estrellas moviéndose lentamente en el cielo tienen probablemente una solución astronómica. Si encuentra una coincidencia entre la posición de los “ovnis” y la de brillantes estrellas planetas, ¡el “wow” inicial puede convertirse en “bingo”!

Hay períodos intensos de informes sobre ovnis, especialmente absorbentes desde el punto de vista social. Uno es 1954, cuando ocurrió una oleada ovni a nivel mundial. Desde el comienzo de mis investigaciones en este campo, me ha atraído especialmente la fenomenología de este año, tan cargado de historias de aterrizajes y desembarcos de ocupantes en Francia, por ejemplo. En cuanto a la fotografías de ovnis el año 1954 también fue abundante. Hace varios años publiqué una monografía sobre las fotografías tomadas ese año:

Con el paso del tiempo se han ido descubriendo algunos casos fotográficos nuevos (suelo utilizar este blog para sacarlos a la luz) y han aparecido datos que corregían detalles inexactos. Por ejemplo, la presente edición contiene un artículo de Luis R. González con la información original de una fotografía española de ese año, recién recuperada de las morgues de prensa ahora digitalizadas.
Tenía en FOTOCAT detalles muy escasos de una fotografía tomada en Buffalo, Nueva York, en junio de 1954. Tampoco conocía ninguna imagen. Afortunadamente, mi magnífica colaboradora de Mississippi Kay Coggin me acaba de enviar el recorte publicado en el Buffalo Courier Express del 23 de junio de 1954: una columna de prensa titulada “Season's First 'Saucer' With Camera” (el primer platillo con cámara de la estación) que proporciona todos los detalles y, además, una copia de la instantánea de una “traza” avistada sobre la ciudad.
Miré alrededor del auto -recordó Perel al diario de la ciudad- en busca de un disparo probable y no vi nada. Luego vi la aguja de la iglesia y me giré con la cámara. Fue entonces cuando vi esta raya brillante cruzando el cielo. Apuntó la cámara y tomó una fotografía de algo que no sabía qué era. ¿Un platillo? Sí y no, dijo. Perel regresó a casa y reveló la foto en un minuto. Llegó al Courier-Express, siguiendo el consejo de un amigo, y comentó: La ilusión parecida a un "platillo" parecía estar a una altitud de 10.000 pies y no volaba muy rápida en dirección oeste. De repente, simplemente se desvaneció. Perel, “un estudiante con licencia de piloto, familiarizado más que la media con las ilusiones del cielo provenientes de las nubes y el resplandor del sol sobre ellas”, afirmó: Nunca he visto algo así antes. Descartó que fueran nubes porque había demasiada neblina y no había otras nubes alrededor del fenómeno captado en la instantánea. El informe del tiempo no dio cuenta de nada inusual en “las operaciones de observación del cielo de ayer”. El meteorólogo dijo: "No sé qué sería".

A bocajarro aportó esta observación: “Si es genuina, sospecho que estamos ante una estela de condensación interrumpida (“broken contrail”). De vez en cuando, las estelas aparecen como líneas discontinuas. Eso sucede cuando se forman en el límite entre una región de alta y baja humedad. Filmación en infrarrojo “Pato de goma”
Un nuevo video infrarrojo tomado desde un avión del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, que había despegado de Tucson, Arizona, en misión de patrulla fronteriza a las 09:00 horas del 23 de noviembre de 2019, cuando se encontraba en 31º 29' N, 111º 27' W, muy cerca de la línea divisoria mejicana. El análisis realizado por Mick West de los datos -incompletos- disponibles de un vídeo muy comprimido concluyó de manera competente y razonable que el objeto era probablemente un globo a la deriva o posiblemente un dron. Su trabajo también cuestiona la interpretación como objeto anómalo hecha por Peter Reali, de la Coalición Científica para Estudios UAP (SCU), para quien el objeto es anómalo (como siempre).

Sin duda, los globos están de moda últimamente. Desde el incidente del globo chino en febrero de 2023 sobre los Estados Unidos, y el siguiente reconocimiento por parte de la AARO del Departamento de Defensa de los EE. UU. de que la mitad de los informes de UAP identificados son globos, están de moda.
Recientemente apareció en la “nube” un tuit con un vídeo que muestra un objeto volante no identificado capturado desde un avión a bordo del cual se encontraba la modelo colombiana Valentina Vélez Rueda.1 Según información proporcionada por “The Hidden Underbelly” (un influencer de internet),2 las imágenes fueron tomadas el 4 de mayo de 2003 por Jorge A. Arteaga, piloto de una avioneta privada Cessna que volaba a 12.500 pies (3.810 metros) y unos 135 nudos (250 kilómetros por hora) entre Medellín y Santa Fe, en el departamento de Antioquía, Colombia. Como se puede ver claramente en las imágenes, un objeto de forma extraña se cruzó en su camino. Para el piloto no se trataba de un globo ni de un dron.
Para el analista de UAPs el norteamericano Mick West, la opción de que se trate de un globo resulta la más obvia. Y nos recuerda que la ciudad colombiana de Medellín es famosa por el lanzamiento de enormes globos con forma de ovnis y alienígenas, como la siguiente3:
Por su parte, Andrés Duarte, químico profesional chileno y reconocido analista de imágenes7,8, en respuesta a nuestra búsqueda de opiniones expertas, señaló haber encontrado varios posibles indicios y una inconsistencia cuantificable que podría probar que el video es un montaje. Eso fue un adelanto muy preliminar, empero, ya que su análisis aún no ha terminado.9
En una afortunada coincidencia, últimamente se emitió otro metraje similar en Hispanoamérica. Fue difundido por la ufóloga mejicana Ross Cantú.10 ¿Fue un UAP? No. Solo otro globo. Véase el hilo que cuelga debajo del globo en la primera imagen, antes de que el avión lo sobrevolara.
En América del Sur uno puede asustarse si el avión en el que viaja se cruza a toda velocidad con un UAP multicolor, pero hay que tener en cuenta la amplia gama de globos de un área de gran tamaño (~100 m2) con formas y colores espectaculares que se lanzan en Latinoamérica, como este ejemplo de Cantoya (Michoacán, México), globos que se sueltan regularmente en festividades locales.11
Y si duda de que simples globos aerostáticos puedan compartir el espacio aéreo a tales alturas, aquí va un ejemplo gráfico: recientemente, un vuelo de la compañía Volaris desde Jalisco a México, D.F. avistó a lo lejos un globo recreativo a un nivel de vuelo de 34.600 pies (10.550 m). ¡Del globo pendía la bandera de Brasil!

En conjunto, veo el género OVNI, superpuesto al trasfondo político y cultural, como una advertencia y un peligro. La sociedad puede utilizar el OVNI como símbolo o salida para preguntas que le resulta difícil reconocer o formular, posiblemente utilizándolo como una especie de válvula de escape o como un medio para ayudar a negociar nuevas configuraciones sociales, pero los ovnis también pueden ser un amplificador de Forteana anticientífica, esoterismo y extremismo que se acumulan cuando el flujo cultural y la desconfianza en la autoridad se vuelven patológicos. Por tales razones deberíamos estar atentos a los platillos: no porque los piloten seres de otros mundos, sino porque, en un sentido muy real, los pilotamos nosotros, y no sabemos muy bien por qué, y descubrir el por qué bien podría ser importante para afrontar los tiempos difíciles que se avecinan. Ya he comentado antes que hay determinados periodos de la historia de la ufología que me interesan especialmente. Mi apreciada colega Kay Coggin, una fuente permanente de antiguos recortes de prensa que incluyen fotos ovni, me ha enviado el siguiente artículo publicado por el Pacific Island Monthly (PIM), volumen XXV, número 5, del 1 de diciembre de 1954. No tenía la menor idea de esta información. Bajo el título “¿Platillo volador sobre Aitutaki?”, la revista insertaba una instantánea y su título, que yo reproduzco: El alegre optimista que envió esto a PIM escribe: “Este es sin duda el primer platillo volante que se ve en la isla. Esta foto fue tomada mientras sobrevolaba la laguna de Aitutaki justo después de que un avión TEAL [Tasman Empire Airways Limited] despegara hacia Tahití. El Sr. C. Dixon, de pie en la popa de la lancha CAA en primer plano, parece bastante imperturbable. En la distancia, el TEAL”. Nuestro amigo supone que ni siquiera una cámara estenopeica puede mentir.
Francamente, esta imagen me parece más bien un simple defecto de revelado de la película, y creo que el editor de la revista sospechaba lo mismo. Pero es una pieza más para nuestra colección de las cosas más extrañas (“stranger things”) de la época. Por cierto, las Islas del Pacífico son un grupo de islas ubicadas al sur del Océano Pacífico, compuestas por Melanesia, Micronesia y Polinesia. En concreto, la laguna de Aitutaki (hoy un resort privado de lujo) se encuentra en las Islas Cook, estado asociado a Nueva Zelanda.
Ha fallecido Illobrand von Ludwiger
Acabo de enterarme gracias a “Marcianitos Verdes”, la página web del investigador mejicano Luis Ruiz Noguez, de la muerte del ufólogo alemán Illobrand von Ludwiger (1937-2023).1 Había mantenido correspondencia irregular con él durante muchos años. En 1995, me invitó a colaborar con un artículo en un libro bajo su dirección: “UFO-Phänomene in Spanien,UFOs-Zeichen und Zeugen”, Edition q (Berlin), pp. 126-139.2 En noviembre de 2004, con ocasión de dar una conferencia en el congreso MUFON-CES en Frankfurt, el día 6 organicé una reunión informal con algunos otros investigadores de ovnis en Alemania, incluido Von Ludwiger.3,4
Von Ludwiger era un líder total y un creyente en la conexión OVNI-extraterrestre, pero también estaba comprometido con el método científico al abordar el tema de los objetos volantes no identificados. Siempre he pensado que uno de los mejores aportes ovni producidos por la literatura europea fue la colección de actas publicadas de los congresos anuales de su organización MUFON-CES.5 Requiescat in pace.

El pasado 15 de mayo de 2023, dentro del grupo de Facebook “Solo Fotos Antiguas de Málaga”, el colaborador habitual José Mora Fernández, publicaba la siguiente foto acompañada de una sucinta explicación.
Sorprendido de que esta revista británica sobre fenómenos misteriosos con casi 50 años de vida (su primer número apareció en noviembre de 1973, y sigue publicándose), hubiese tenido ocasión de publicar una fotografía de un supuesto platillo volante tomada en la ciudad donde he residido casi toda la vida, me decidí a documentarme sobre ello. El primer paso obligado era confirmar los datos, para lo que consulté al investigador valenciano Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos que, desde hace años, mantiene un catálogo de fotografías ovni denominado FOTOCAT (1).
Ballester me remitió a su publicación FOTOCAT REPORT #1, “El año 1954 en fotos (Versión ampliada)”, que puede consultarse gratuitamente en la página electrónica de Academia.edu (2). Allí, en la página 38, aparecían algunos datos adicionales.

Por desgracia, Ballester me comunicó que no disponía de la fuente más antigua (el diario Madrid), solo la del otro periódico de la capital española que lo citaba. Extrañado ante la ausencia de una fuente local, decidí mirar los periódicos malagueños de esos meses (entre la supuesta fecha en que se tomó la foto y su aparición en el periódico madrileño). Personado en el Archivo Municipal, tuve ocasión de revisar los periódicos Hoja del Lunes, La Tarde y Sur, sin lograr encontrarla.
Lo que sí encontré fueron varias referencias al fenómeno de los platillos volantes, en especial chistes gráficos generalmente sin firma ni acreditación. Para los no iniciados, recordaré que, entre septiembre y octubre de 1954, se desarrolló sobre nuestra vecina Francia una verdadera oleada de avistamientos de platillos volantes, pero no solo en el cielo. Se recogieron muchas denuncias de aterrizajes y casi un centenar de encuentros con los supuestos ocupantes de los mismos (calificados, en general, como “marcianos”). En noviembre, mucho más calmada, la oleada se trasladó a Italia. En el resto de los países europeos (incluida España) apenas si se mencionaron avistamientos cercanos propios (3), pero la prensa se hizo eco de lo que ocurría en el país vecino, por lo general aquellos incidentes más abracadabrantes.
Quedaba una esperanza. En la versión digitalizada del diario Sur disponible en el Archivo Municipal existían bastantes huecos En concreto, el periódico se hacía eco de los platillos volantes los días 20, 21, 27 y 31 de octubre, pero faltaban los ejemplares de los días 13, 15, 17, 24, 26 y 28 de octubre. Y los días 2, 3, 6, 14, 16 y 29 de noviembre de 1954. Personado en la propia redacción del periódico no pude consultar ni los originales ni su versión digitalizada con la absurda excusa de que dicho servicio había quedado interrumpido por la pandemia. Finalmente, me dirigí a la Biblioteca Provincial de la Junta de Andalucía, en la Avenida de Europa, donde me comentaron que los ejemplares que me interesaban no estaban disponibles por estar en restauración. Mi gozo en un pozo.
Fueron pasando las semanas y finalmente hace unos días, cuando volví a preguntar por ellos, no solo me dijeron que ya estaban disponibles (en papel) sino que la noticia que buscaba aparecía en el periódico del sábado 6 de noviembre de 1954. Sin tardanza, me personé en dicha biblioteca pública y pude obtener las fotos que acompañan a este artículo.
En la última página del periódico Sur del mencionado sábado, aparecía esta fotografía con el siguiente texto:
¿PLATILLO VOLANTE SOBRE EL ARROYO DE LOS ANGELES?
Esta es la fotografía tomada por dos muchachos el pasado día 2 de noviembre. Puede advertirse en ella un trozo del Arroyo de los Ángeles y encima –hacia la izquierda- el supuesto platillo volante. Aunque la foto es algo imperfecta, el objeto volador es fácilmente visible. (Véase información en “Un reportaje al día”)
Efectivamente, en página interior se daban muchos más detalles e incluso aparecía una foto de los dos testigos.
Para mayor claridad, transcribiré el texto del reportaje,
UN REPORTAJE AL DIA – Dos muchachos malagueños aseguran que vieron un platillo volante sobre el arroyo de los Ángeles. Lograron hacer una fotografía de él.
Lo de ver platillos volantes está ya a la orden del día, Málaga tenía que tener, como tantas otras regiones, su visión de un platillo. Y ya la tiene. Se la debemos a dos jóvenes que trabajan en Telégrafos y se llaman, respectivamente, Juan Coll y José Antonio Baena. El periodista suele ser escéptico en algunas cosas, pero tiene que limitarse a informar a sus lectores sobre lo puramente informativo, aquello que puede interesar al lector. Con esta idea hacemos el reportaje presente, sin poner ni quitar nada.
De nuestros dos visitantes, el que más habla es José Antonio Baena, mientras Coll asiente a las palabras de su amigo y, de vez en cuando, redondea alguna de sus informaciones.
-Cuénteme lo que pasó.
-El día 2 de noviembre caminábamos por los alrededores del arroyo de los Ángeles, con el propósito de encontrar un lugar adecuado para hacernos unas fotos…
-Llevaban máquina, ¿no?
-Sí, señor; un Kodak antigua 6x9.
-¿Qué vieron?
-Al mirar hacia arriba casualmente vimos los dos casi a la vez un objeto redondeado, que parecía estabilizado, como flotando.
-¿A qué altura?
-A unos doscientos metros. Así permaneció durante diez a quince segundos, al cabo de los cuales ascendió de repente en trayectoria inclinada, velozmente y sin ruido.
-¿Y entonces?
-Hacia los quinientos metros aproximadamente volvió a detenerse, quedando en situación horizontal. Descendió luego en forma similar al ascenso, después se elevó definitivamente, desapareciendo tras del monte Coronado.
-¿En qué momento hicieron la fotografía?- preguntamos ante la copia que nos presentan y en el que se ve un trozo de campo y arriba un objeto circular, difícil de definir.
-Durante el último descenso. Por cierto que al ser tomada a contraluz no permite distinguir muchos detalles.
-¿A qué hora sucedió lo que me ha contado?
-Serían las doce y media.
-¿Lo presenció alguien más?
-En aquel lugar no encontramos más que a unos niños que jugaban. Para que corroborara nuestra visión buscamos a alguna otra persona. Pero sin encontrarla.
-¿Desde dónde está tomada la foto?
-Desde un cerrillo.
-¿Cómo definiría lo que vio?
-Era una especie de globo parado, con brillo. Pero éste no era muy y más bien daba sensación de tener unos fulgores o hilos de luz.
-¿Dimensiones?
-Tendría más de cuatro metros de diámetro.
-¿Velocidad?
-Era enorme, acaso doble o triple que la de un avión a reacción.
-¿No sería, en realidad, uno de éstos?
-No, señor; yo he visto muchos en Mérida y no puedo confundirme fácilmente.
-¿Hacía viento aquel día?
-Ninguno; además aquel aparato daba la sensación de que se movía muy rápidamente y de que sus paradas eran en seco.
-¿Lo vieron durante mucho tiempo?
-Creo que durante un minuto.
-¿Lo contaron a alguien?
-No nos atrevimos a hacer pública la noticia hasta contar con el testimonio irrecusable de la fotografía que, casualmente, obtuvimos. Respaldados por esta prueba y por ser dos los videntes, estimamos que no se trata de un caso de sugestión o de ilusión óptica.
-¿Lo comentaron en la oficina?
-Sí, señor. Y ya sabe usted cómo son estas cosas. Se suelen reír de uno por lo general.
-¿Saben que un semanario francés ha ofrecido un millón de francos por una foto de un platillo volante?
-No lo sabíamos. Pero la fotografía que hicimos es muy imperfecta. Sólo queremos que ella nos sirva de justificación.
Hasta aquí las palabras de José Antonio Baena, que habla largamente y con cierto tono. Repetimos que no estamos ni dentro ni fuera de la noticia. Pero reconocemos su pintoresquismo. Y ahí está. JUAN ANTONIO RANDO
En los días siguientes no vuelve a hablarse del asunto, ni hay ningún desmentido o mención a que se tratase de una broma o montaje. Lo que sí aparecen son más chistes. Teniendo ya los datos más precisos, y la fecha exacta en que supuestamente fue tomada la foto (martes, 2 de noviembre de 1954, sobre las 12:30 horas) intenté localizar la ubicación desde donde fue tomada. Solo había tres pistas:
(a) Había sido tomada desde “un cerrillo” en las cercanías del Arroyo de los Ángeles (actualmente embovedado).
(b) Los distintivos y prominentes tejados que aparecen a la derecha de la foto.
(c) La silueta de las colinas al fondo. Parece que el monte Victoria sería el que aparece en el centro, y la elevación a la derecha sería el monte de Gibralfaro. El monte Coronado, mencionado en el texto, se sitúa fuera de imagen, mucho más a la izquierda.
Por suerte, la pista (b) estaba todavía en pie y se trata de los tejados del actual Hospital Civil inaugurado en 1892. Como puede comprobarse en una foto aérea de los años cincuenta (4), su situación era prominente en esa zona poco habitada por aquellos años y se sitúa justo en la margen izquierda del llamado Arroyo de los Ángeles (mirando desde su desembocadura en el río Guadalmedina, en la esquina inferior derecha de la foto).
En una fotografía hecha en la actualidad, el pico prominente de la derecha estaría fuera de la foto de 1954, y el que aparece claro en la misma sería el que se sitúa detrás de los rascacielos en construcción. La foto de 1954 se habría hecho mirando más a la derecha, pero ahora resulta imposible.
Sin embargo, el gran crecimiento urbanístico de la zona en los años transcurridos y la frondosidad de los árboles que abundan en la zona, han impedido por completo ubicar con la exactitud deseada el punto desde donde se habría tomado la foto. Lo más probable es que fuese tomada (en dirección aproximadamente sursudeste, no comprobada con brújula) desde una elevación conocida actualmente como Urbanización La Roca, pero resulta imposible ser más preciso.
Un comentario sobre la difusión periodística de la noticia. Como hemos visto, la publicación más cercana a los hechos (SUR, 06/11/54) indica la fecha del 2 de noviembre a las 12:30 horas aproximadamente. Tras unas gestiones telemáticas con la Hemeroteca Nacional de Madrid pude obtener, previo pago de la correspondiente tasa, la segunda referencia cronológica (Madrid, 06/11/54) donde se comprueba que el mismo periodista que publicó el reportaje del periódico malacitano, Juan Antonio Rando, realizó la crónica más resumida publicada en Madrid. No existen diferencias sustanciales: describe a los fotógrafos como “modestos funcionarios de Telégrafos”, añade un poco más de dramatismo a la historia, cambia “descenso” por “ascenso” (un matiz que puede ser importante) y emplea otra ordenación del diálogo. También añade detalles (quizá encontrados al revisar la grabación de la entrevista, o tomándose libertades con la literalidad de lo declarado):
En los momentos en que estuvo inmóvil parecía emitir destellos débiles. Pero no tenía brillo metálico en absoluto, sino un color muy oscuro, mate.
Además, el aparato daba sensación de tener vida propia. La puesta en marcha, en los movimientos que hizo, fue más lenta. Pero la parada daba la impresión de ser rapidísima, en seco.
Como sabe, en el arroyo de los Ángeles no hay nunca nadie. En aquellos momentos sólo nos encontrábamos allí los dos y unos niños pequeños. Pero estamos seguros, por la altura en que estaba aquel aparato, que debió de ser advertido por alguien más.
Existe, sin embargo, una discrepancia clara, el tamaño del objeto. En la entrevista original para SUR las dimensiones se recogen como Tendría más de cuatro metros de diámetro, mientras que la versión de Madrid dice Unos tres metros de diámetro. Por lo menos, esa fue la sensación que nos dio a primera vista.
Finalmente, el periodista añade: Los dos muchachos estaban muy emocionados y parecían sinceros, contestando a nuestras preguntas con rigor y buen sentido. Desde luego, no tenían aprendida la lección con anterioridad. Eso podemos asegurarlo.
Curiosa la Nota de Redacción añadida a continuación, síntoma claro de los tiempos: “Aunque conocemos la veracidad de nuestro corresponsal en Málaga, dada la importancia de esta información, y teniendo en cuenta las discusiones que este tema suscita, dejamos la responsabilidad de la misma, y también su éxito, al señor Rando y a las personas que se la han facilitado”.
Si hemos de juzgar por su difusión, algo de éxito sí que tuvo. Y ahí comienzan a acumularse las distorsiones y errores. La tercera fuente (YA, 11/11/54) presenta la foto con una nota muy resumida sin firma bajo el título “En Málaga retrataron un platillo volante” donde se ha deslizado, apenas una semana más tarde, el primer error, al cambiar inexplicablemente, la fecha y la hora del suceso: “Serían las dos y media de la tarde del martes, día 12 de octubre”. Además, se añade una curiosa frase final: “A su regreso a Málaga”, indicativa del desconocimiento de la zona, porque el arroyo mencionado está dentro de los límites del término municipal.
Respecto de la fotografía ovni en sí, nada puede decirse con fundamento. Resulta curioso que el periodista estuviese informado de esa recompensa real ofrecida por un periódico francés, pero no la he visto mencionada en los periódicos malagueños en los días anteriores (aunque no puede descartarse que la noticia fuese divulgada por radio). Sin embargo, los propios fotógrafos descartan reclamarla ya que su imagen es “muy imperfecta”. No parece la excusa para un fraude. Dado el tiempo transcurrido, no se ha intentado localizar a los autores (ni a familiares del prestigioso periodista ya fallecido, al que incluso se le ha dedicado una calle), pues además el Sr. Baena parecía estar solo de paso, quizá destinado aquí. Su mención para haber tenido “muchas” ocasiones de ver reactores en Mérida, aunque quizá algo exagerada es verosímil, porque los primeros reactores del Ejército del Aire español (seis aviones Lockheed T-33 comprados a los americanos tras la firma el año anterior del tratado para ceder cuatro bases en nuestro país) llegaron a la cercana Base Aérea de Talavera la Real (Badajoz) el 24 de marzo de 1954.
A los ojos modernos, llama la atención el pequeño tamaño atribuido al platillo. A modo de comparación, el reactor Lockheed T-33 mide 11 metros de largo, por otros tantos de envergadura alar. Sin embargo, esas reducidas dimensiones no desentonan con las medidas iniciales atribuidas a estos objetos por todo el mundo en aquellos años. Sí resulta algo extraño que unos funcionarios de Telégrafos estuviesen de paseo un día laborable, pero existen multitud de explicaciones posibles para ello. Cierto que, a esa hora, aun en una zona tan apartada como aquella debería haber habido más testigos, pero tampoco el periodista parece haber hecho el menor intento por localizarlos.
Conclusión: Para mí, sería algo lanzado al aire. Sin embargo, es una mera suposición mía. No tenemos forma de saberlo y no me gusta concluir suposiciones ni cuestionar la credibilidad de personas que no pueden defenderse. Si acaso algo como "muy probablemente, a juzgar por la experiencia acumulada en los 70 años transcurridos, sea un simple objeto lanzado al aire por unos bromistas, no una diminuta nave espacial". Una hipótesis alternativa para el caso de Antonio Villas Boas

El reciente libro de Cláudio T. Suenaga, Encuentros cercanos de todo tipo retoma 65 años después la experiencia de Antonio Villas Boas, ocurrida en San Francisco de Sales, Minas Gerais, Brasil (Suenaga, 2023). Los detalles del incidente se hicieron conocidos internacionalmente tras la publicación del libro The Humanoids (Bowen, 1966), y son descritos en el capítulo “The Amazing Case of Antônio Vilas Boas”, firmado por Gordon Creighton. Al citado capítulo y al libro de Suenaga remitimos a los lectores interesados.
La hipótesis popular elaborada a partir de la experiencia de Antonio Villas Boas (AVB) puede expresarse así: “AVB fue secuestrado por seres extraterrestres que lo sometieron, cual conejillo de indias, a una serie de experimentos, dentro de una nave interplanetaria, con el objeto de fecundar a una mujer alienígena con esperma humano. Tal experiencia le produjo a AVB problemas de salud”. En esta nota intentaremos dar una hipótesis alternativa: “AVB tuvo una experiencia onírica durante un shock anafiláctico provocado por una urticaria solar”. Que la experiencia fue onírica lo sugieren algunos detalles como que las puertas por donde pasaba aparecían y desaparecían, otras eran rebatibles a ambos lados, en la pared aparecieron unos tubos con agujeros que antes no se habían notado, etcétera; y que al día siguiente “ … varias veces llegó a conciliar el sueño, pero inmediatamente comenzaba a soñar con los acontecimientos del días anterior, con tanto realismo que le parecía que todo estaba ocurriendo de nuevo” (Suenaga, 2023). Más abajo nos referiremos a la urticaria solar.
La segunda hipótesis nos la sugirió la atenta lectura del ya mencionado libro de Suenaga. En este tipo de casos es frecuente leer las consecuencias para la salud que provocan las supuestas abducciones. Pero en el incidente de AVB parece que la relación de causa y efecto se dio al revés, y es una enfermedad la que provocó la supuesta abducción. Leemos en el libro de Suenaga que, en su informe del 22 de febrero de 1958, el médico y ufólogo Olavo T. Fontes no anotó una enfermedad que AVB sufría desde niño. No sabemos si AVB no se la nombró o el médico ufólogo olvidó anotar. Pero la hermana de AVB lo dice claramente: “… de niño, tenía un problema respiratorio que le impedía dormir bien si tomaba mucho Sol” (Suenaga, 2023).
La urticaria solar es un tipo de alergia solar que provoca urticaria después de tan solo unos minutos de exposición al sol. Los síntomas pueden ser de leves a severos. Las alergias al sol pueden afectar a cualquier persona, incluidas todas las edades, razas y géneros o sexos. Las reacciones al sol son más comunes en la primavera y principios del verano, cuando las personas comienzan a exponerse al sol con más frecuencia. Los síntomas de alergia al sol pueden aparecer unos minutos, horas o días después de la exposición al sol. Pueden variar de leves a graves, dependiendo de la cantidad de superficie de piel expuesta, de la cantidad de tiempo al sol, de la intensidad de la luz, o del tipo de alergia solar. La erupción generalmente ocurre solo en áreas que estuvieron expuestas a la luz solar. Pero a veces, puede aparecer en otras partes de la piel. Una erupción por alergia al sol puede implicar bultos, pápulas, nódulos, ampollas o urticaria, picazón, rezumando, enrojecimiento, descamación o formación de costras, sensación de escozor o ardor, o hinchazón. En raras ocasiones, la alergia al sol puede causar síntomas sistémicos, como dolor de cabeza, mareos o desmayos, náuseas y vómitos, sibilancias o dificultad para respirar, y en el caso de la urticaria solar, anafilaxia. La anafilaxia hace que el sistema inmunitario libere una avalancha de sustancias químicas que pueden causar un estado de shock: la presión arterial cae repentinamente y las vías respiratorias se estrechan, bloqueando la respiración, apareciendo signos y síntomas que incluyen pulso rápido y débil, una erupción cutánea, y náuseas y vómitos (Mi sistema inmune, 2021).
La urticaria solar es un tipo raro de urticaria física mediada por inmunoglobulina E (IgE). Normalmente se presenta con parches eritematosos, pruriginosos y de corta duración y ronchas que se forman aproximadamente de cinco a diez minutos después de la exposición a la luz solar. La urticaria solar también puede estar asociada con manifestaciones sistémicas, como mareos, dolores de cabeza, náuseas, síncope, sibilancias y, en raras ocasiones, shock anafiláctico. La urticaria solar afecta principalmente a mujeres y en la mayoría de los pacientes se presenta entre los 20 y los 40 años de edad. Se requiere que haya una exposición a la luz directa. Sin embargo, en algunos pacientes, los síntomas pueden ocurrir incluso cuando se exponen a la luz mientras se usa ropa. La patogenia de la urticaria solar aún no se ha establecido definitivamente. Las longitudes de onda específicas de la luz, o espectro de acción, que provocan una reacción de urticaria varía en cada paciente. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de los casos de urticaria las reacciones ocurren después de la exposición a la radiación ultravioleta que oscila entre 280 y 500 nanómetros. Los investigadores han propuesto que el espectro de acción desencadenante de la urticaria induce a un cromóforo cutáneo a absorber la luz. El foto-producto que se crea actúa entonces como un foto-alérgeno. Posteriormente, los anticuerpos IgE específicos dirigidos contra el foto-alérgeno se unen a los mastocitos, lo que resulta en la liberación de histamina (Diehl et al., 2021). Los síntomas comienzan con un prurito pronunciado en la zona de la piel expuesta al sol, seguido de eritema y formación de ronchas de grado variable. En los casos más severos aparecen dolor de cabeza y vértigos. También se han descrito náuseas, broncoespasmo, hipertensión arterial y taquicardia, incluso hasta shock anafiláctico. La duración y la intensidad de la radiación requerida para provocar una reacción en la piel difieren entre los individuos (Gaebelein-Wissing, N., Ellenbogen, E. y Lehmann, P., 2020).
El incidente de AVB podría haber ocurrido, entonces, como consecuencia de una crisis anafiláctica producida por una urticaria solar, y habría sido experimentada de manera onírica.
Toda la experiencia de AVB tiene ribetes oníricos. Y especulando nos podemos preguntar. ¿Y si AVB, de niño, sufrió una fuerte urticaria, y lo llevaron a un hospital, donde lo desnudaron y le hicieron un tratamiento tópico con algún líquido corticoide? Porque la experiencia de abducción de AVB, además de ser onírica, parece reproducir un escenario de intervención hospitalaria como el descrito. Quizás un episodio similar le produjo el recuerdo de aquella supuesta intervención médica. Recordemos aquí los artículos del psiquiatra David Forrest (2008, 2023) sobre las abducciones alienígenas como recuerdos vívidos de procedimientos médicos.
En todo caso, y para finalizar, las dos hipótesis, intervención extraterrestre y urticaria solar, están planteadas.

Ponga un Starlink en su vida
El 23 de junio pasado mi esposa y yo nos trasladamos al chalé de La Eliana (Valencia) a iniciar nuestras vacaciones de verano. Esa noche, la de San Juan, mis dos hijas, mis yernos y sus hijos vinieron a casa a festejar la efeméride. Cena en la terraza, hoguera con piñas (que saltamos, naturalmente), etc. Una gozada. Alrededor de las once de la noche estaba durmiendo a mi nieto Lucas (mientras le contaba Caperucita Roja) y cuando salí de su habitación oí al resto de adultos y niños contar sorprendidos que "habían visto un ovni". ¡Dios, y desde mi propia casa, pensé! ¿Tendré que revertir mis convicciones? En cuanto me explicaron lo que habían visto, les dije al instante que el tren de 40-50 luces que habían visto recorrer el espacio lentamente no eran marcianos sino los satélites Starlink de SpaceX. En efecto, de inmediato comprobé que la empresa de Elon Musk había lanzado desde Cabo Cañaveral, en Florida, un cohete de la serie Falcon 9 que puso en órbita a nada menos que 56 satélites. El lanzamiento fue a las 15:35 GMT (17:35 hora de España).
Comenté la anécdota en plan de chanza en la lista Anomalist e inmediatamente Edo Russo anunció que se había visto desde Cerdeña (Italia) a las 22:52 horas en dirección NW-SE. Desde la playa de Oliva (Valencia), nuestro compañero Javier Resines los observó y fotografió a las 22:48 horas moviéndose hacia el mar (dirección este). Usó su smartphone para tomar algunas imágenes, un par de las cuales acompañan esta notita.
Verano es tiempo propicio para algunas tareas administrativas como, por ejemplo, archivar. Guardando papeles en mis archivos de casos de encuentros cercanos y actualizando, por ello, mis catálogos de aterrizaje, LANIB, NELIB y NEWCAT, encuentro las siguientes cifras que quiero compartir con el lector:
1950-1985, 833 informes (23,1 casos por año).
1986-2000, 220 informes (14,7 casos por año).
2001-2020, 54 informes (2,7 casos por año).
El siguiente histograma presenta las cifras gráficamente. El descenso es significativo. ¿A qué podemos atribuirlo? ¿La gente se equivoca menos que en el pasado, o informa menos lo que ve, o se publica menos lo que se informa? Dado que no hay un fenómeno único tras de todo ello, no podemos afirmar que los ovnis nos visitan en mucha menor proporción, sino que el número de sucesos conocidos es sensiblemente menor. ¿Y que prima más, entonces? El factor información (hay mayor cultura científica popular, la gente tiene más sentido crítico o los ovnis ya no están de moda e informar no está incentivado) o el factor publicación (menos libros, revistas y sitios dedicados a esta materia)? Como hablamos de supuestas “experiencias” dramáticas (un platillo volante toma tierra y deja ver a sus tripulantes), en las que el componente fiabilidad del testigo es crítico, personalmente lo atribuyo a que cierto público no se ve motivado a crear o recrear estas observaciones.
El falso UAP del 26/6/2023
Varias fuentes nos informaban recientemente de un “misterioso fenómeno” aéreo. Claude Maugé citaba a Le Monde del 29 de junio sobre el lanzamiento alrededor de las 22 horas del día 26 del V-MAX, el primer planeador hipersónico de tecnología francesa lanzado por un cohete desde el centro de ensayos que tiene la DGA (Dirección General de Armamento) en Biscarosse, Landas, a unos 100 km al sur de Burdeos, hacia el Atlántico. Previamente se había difundido un anuncio de advertencia para el tráfico aéreo y marítimo cubriendo un corredor de 2000 km. Por último, Thierry Rocher compartía con nosotros un recorte del diario francés Sud Ouest, que en su edición del 28 de junio explicaba con detalle el lanzamiento del ingenio espacial, con una fotografía del mismo en su ascenso celeste. Gracias a los cinco colegas por sus informaciones.
Investigación de Julio Plaza
El físico español Julio Plaza del Olmo (Madrid, 1976) está resultando, además de un agudo analista, como científico profesional que es, un prolífico autor de trabajos de investigación. Concretamente, este año ha publicado tres trabajos propios de importancia, que lo consolidan como uno de los estudiosos más brillantes de la actualidad ufológica en nuestro país. Quiero hacerme eco de ellos para conocimiento y aprovechamiento general:
“Comments to Physical constraints on UAPs”. Comentarios al borrador de un artículo de Avi Loeb (Proyecto Galileo) y Sean Kirkpatrick (Director de AARO), donde discuten los límites físicos a las interpretaciones de UAPs. Lo cierto es que el trabajo comentado está plagado de especulaciones secundarias sin relación con el que pretende ser el tema principal del artículo.

“Expediente Manises: El terreno alrededor de Escombreras”. La hipótesis que explicaría el caso Manises establece que fueron las chimeneas de la refinería de Escombreras lo que vieron los pilotos. Sin embargo, la refinería se halla en un valle rodeada de montes, por lo que éstos podrían haber ocultado las llamas de las chimeneas. Este trabajo demuestra que algunas de las chimeneas sí eran visibles, e incluso que una de ellas reproduce el avistamiento tal y como se produjo. Sin embargo, hace falta encontrar un segundo estímulo luminoso para completar la hipótesis.

“Expediente Manises: La Sexta Flota y la Armada Española”. Resumen: Se han consultado los cuadernos de bitácora de varios buques de la Sexta Flota y de la Armada Española. Estos buques se encontraban en el Mediterráneo los días anteriores al incidente Manises realizando el ejercicio CRISEX79. Se han estudiado los días previos, qué hacían el mismo día 11 de noviembre, y los días posteriores con objeto de poner contexto a la actividad marítima de aquellos días. Tras los ejercicios CRISEX79, la Sexta Flota estuvo navegando durante los días 10 y 11 hasta recalar en varios puertos del Mediterráneo, entre ellos Palma, Valencia y Alicante. Posteriormente se reagrupó en puertos italianos. La Armada en cambio se concentró en el entorno de Cartagena para realizar los ejercicios “post-crisex” entre los días 13 y 15 de noviembre. Entre las entradas de las bitácoras se ha encontrado qué tipo de incidentes, usuales y no tan usuales, quedan recogidos, aunque no se ha encontrado ninguna el día 11 que se pueda relacionar con el incidente Manises. Por último, es de interés saber qué otros buques estaban en el Mediterráneo para continuar las pesquisas.
